Why spay 12 weeks after season?

Just wondering the reason why you have to wait 12 weeks after season before you can spay your dog?

Re: Why spay 12 weeks after season?

To lessen the risk of bleeding out. I think when they are in season the blood vessels/flow around that area is increased making surgery more risky.

Although it may look as if things have returned to normal externally, internally things havent and neither has hormone levels. For Hormones to return to normal levels it takes the 12 weeks, also as internally things havent returned to normal it can increase surgery risks in things like bleeding out, therefore wise to wait the 12 weeks. There are some schools of thought too that doing it at the "wrong time" it an cause an increased risk in later life in the female for urinary incontinence associated with uretheral sphincter incompetance, so that they for example leak urine in their sleep.
