Collecting puppy?

How should I transport my Lab puppy home? I know its a good 7 weeks yet but i like to be organised!

There will be me, my brother, my sister, my mum and my dad so all of the seats will be taken up. The journey is about 50 minutes. We intend for the pup as an adult to travel in the boot so im not sure if we should do this from day 1 or not? When we collected Monty (8 years ago) we had a small cat basket for him on the middle seat (my sister wasnt born then) and he wee'd and was sick - it was only a 30 minute journey!

i have got a small 24inch crate and we are ordering a 36inch for the house. I thought about putting the 24inch in the boot for the puppy with a blanket and toy or will that be scary for a puppy?

How did you travel with your pup when you collected it?

Re: Collecting puppy?

Hubby drove and I had Kilo on a blanket on my lap on the back seat; that is what the breeder advised me to do. He just settled and was good as gold all the way home. We took him out every day after that in the car for tiny short journeys to get used to it in the same manner and then after a week or so introduced him to his crate in the boot. It was really vital that I got the car 'right' as he had to come to work with me from 14 weeks old and it was a 60mile round trip every day.

Re: Collecting puppy?

my friend took me to get Biggles - my friend and her fella were in front I was in backwith Biggles on my knee

If you think about it this is going to be *the* scariest moment for your pup

can I ask how old you are please? for your pup I would suggest either oldest child (if over 18 - for strength) or one of your parents is in the back with pup and other two kids whilst oldest kid sits in front with whoever is driving

the reason I say pup is in back not on adult's lap in front is incase (she?) gets loose can't get under the driver's feet

Re: Collecting puppy?

When i got Tammy i had her in a little carrier crate (like for cats) and i held it on my lap as there were no seats free, the journey was about 60-90 minutes but it was perfectly comfortable and ment i could talk to her and be close so she could smell me and feel safe
With Charlie we had a seat free so we had a normal crate in the back seat with blankets covering most of it to make her feel safe. I was sitting next to her too, that journey was about 2 hours or so and typically she was sick just as we was turning up our road in the last minute of the journey!

Re: Collecting puppy?

We brought both of our's home on my lap, they now both travel in the boot no issues. IMHO 50 min's is too much to ask a pup to be stuck in the boot, scared after being taken away from their mother , they will need comforting so the lap is perfect Boot training can start once the pup is happy to travel in the car and is settled into his new home

Re: Collecting puppy?

I would put him in his crate, it my be a bit stressful for him but he will survive and its the safest option.

Re: Collecting puppy?

Personally, I'd follow Indymamma's idea, with either you or one of your parents holding the puppy on their lap with a blanket. You can start introducing the crate once you get home, but for one of the scariest times in a pups life (leaving their mother and siblings), they need comforting and its a good bonding start too.
