Re: need a job for my dog

The OH works all of ours, i have three lurchers (although one is too young to work and the other is just a courser - lure coursing than a rabbiter) and i have a patterdale.

The OH does rabbiting, ferreting & lamping with them.

The patterdale is a flusher and he puts a traker on it then he goes to ground and flushes the quarry.

SO if you dont have a traker then i wouldn't suggest sending him to ground as you may have a long wait for him to come up. The OH had to dig ours out once, so luckily with the traker we knew where he was.

Have you thought about lure coursing? They do lure coursing for terriers too:

We also used to do agility with the patterdale and he loved it. Although you need the basic commands there like sit, wait etc.

What are you able to commit to in terms of time and resources?

Many people get involved in activities like Flyball or assault-course type agility activities, for which many groups exist that you will find through local searches.

If you are seeking to do something solo this site offers some ideas: Indoor Games for Dogs

Many books are availible to offer detailed ideas and instruction.

Re: need a job for my dog

Apart from the odd bit of plumbing

I run with my dog and he loves it, seems to regard it as work.

Re: need a job for my dog

What about teaching your dog to track.
I have taught all my dogs, they loved it and it tires them out as it is a mental activity as well as physical activity especially if you lay, items (such as small toys to start with) at various points.

Re: need a job for my dog

Angus likes doing agility when he's not busy training as a seed collector for the Botanics or working as a gardener

Dogless and missnaomi like this.

Re: need a job for my dog

We've just started tracking and it's lots of fun he loves it because he's using his nose. Lure coursing didn't work so well halfway down he decided chasing a plastic bag was stupid and came running back and knocked me over even worse all the other terriers followed him

You could do things at home like hiding treats/toys and getting him to sniff them out or trick training
