Re: Claiming for death by accident

so sorry for your loss

the only way I can think of is pretty horrible I'm afraid - you may have to arrange with a vet to exhume pup and perform an autopsy - not pleasant in any circumstances and even worse depending how long ago due to decomposition

phone the insurance company and explain the situation - if there are any other witnesses see if signed testimony is enough to replace it

Re: Claiming for death by accident

Sorry to hear about your loss.
Unfortunately, I think that most insurance companies do have to have a signature from a vet as proof of death. I know it probably was the last thing on your mind at the time and I think that should be taken into account but your only hope is to phone them and see what they can advise

Re: Claiming for death by accident

You must have reported the death to someone - perhaps the train company would write to you confirming the circumstances, and you could use that instead?

The trains computer should show impact, and as it works for birds it will have almost certainly triggered, so this is the only way I can think of which doesn't involve having to take your dog to the vets for confirmation.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

As an aside, it might be worth checking your policy documents as to what is covered by accidental death. Some policies exclude motor related deaths as they are mostly avoidable. Controversial, but we hear about it a lot at work - I just can't remember what companies.

Who told you that my OH has hit a sheep and birds many times and it was not pick up by the computer, all it knows is the driver applied the break if he had time to do it. If a train has forward looking cameras that would be the only way they would know.

Lightbulb Re: Claiming for death by accident

What train computer ?

Exactly how does that work ?

Some trains are fitted with cameras that record the track directly ahead of the train but the recording will only be saved IF the driver reports an incident worthy of further investigation. If much time has passed since the death I very much doubt that there will be such a recording remaining, the memory card will have been overwritten.

The OP might get a statement from the driver?

The insurance company might accept "statement of witness" from neighbours that you had a dog and now do not have a dog.

In any case the people to talk to is the insurance company.

If you are getting another dog one would hope that you repair/improve the fences between your property and the railway line. I will assume that the railway company's responsibility is to prevent humans "straying" on-to the tracks, I doubt they have liability for pets.

You might discuss with them the fence if you have children that might chase after a straying dog, if you are polite you might get some assistance.
