Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

How do these breeds get on with cats? As I have 4 and this will help me narrow down the breed I like.

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I have a cocker spaniel Sonny - I do not have any cats however Sonny only wants to play with the neighbours cats (not quite sure the cats see it that way) so think he would be OK with one although if the cat run away Sonny may try and chase it. I used to have mice and gerbils and Sonny used to lick one of my male mice through the cage bars - in a nice way not as a taster session and bark at the gerbils as he wanted them to play with him He was brought up around them as I already had the small amimals when I got Sonny. Do not know about the Beagle or Manchester Terrier though as I have never had them.

I have a cocker spaniel. we had him from a puppy and he still wants to chase the cat. Our cat is nervous so a bold cat may have been better. But he isn't aggressive, he just wants to lick her and play with her, but my cat runs away, so he chases.

hey my parents own two cocker spaniels and from there experience they dont like cats they chase neibours cats and bark at them this may b becos my parents have never owned cats tho ... if ur getin a pup any breed brought up with cats shud b ok with them ..however id avoid terrier breeds tbh as there natural hunters/killers and there instinct may take over... beagles and cockers however are gun dogs they simply flush and retrieve game not actualy kill it so id b tempted along the gun dog group... preferably the cocker tbh ... hope this helps

My Beagle wants to chase cats, and anything else in the street that moves!

But he hasn't been brought up around cats as a puppy...

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I have a cocker spaniel and he's fine with our cat, although it did take her about 4 months to learn not to run away from him! She was one year old when we got him as a 12 week old pup.

If Sherlock's anything to go by, cockers do have a high chase tendency, so we had to teach him that it is not ok to chase her, and she had to learn that she doesn't need to run away from him. They get on fine now.

He only chases in a playful way though - when he gets the chance all he does is lick her.

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I have 2 Foxhounds or crosses,so similar characteristics to Beagles and they have both been brought into the house as adults with resident cats or cat.

No problems at all with chasing or anything.

Cats outside the house or in our garden are a different matter with Craven though.

Flint isn't bothered about any cats,in fact he's a little bit scared of them.

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I've got a 6 yr old cocker spaniel and a 6 yr old springer spaniel, on October last year we got 2 Ragdoll kittens at first there was the fascination in them but they didn't chase them around the house, to get them accustomed though we had an extra large dog cage that the kitten bed litter tray and food/water would fit in. It wasn't long before they got used to oneanother.

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I have a beagle and she is fantastic with my cats. She was brought into our home at 5 month old and had never experienced living with any other animals - but my cats were bold and used to dogs so just ignored her if she tried to chase them ie they'd smack her on the nose or just sit and completely ignore her.
She also lives with my 3 housebuns, and doesn't have any instinct to try chase them.
I think it just depends on how you bring them up & what your cats are like with dogs

Re: Calling all beagle, Manchester terrier, cocker spaniel owners!

I have a 2 year old beagle, not been brought up around cats and his only experience of contact with a cat was one that jumped out of a bush when walking up our dark drive one night, safe to say they are not his best friends.I'm sure if introduced as a pup he would be fine,he's ok with chicken and geese etc because he has been around them since a pup.
