What should the government do about dangerous dogs?

Hey

The government have put through plans for compulsory microchipping to help stop dangerous dogs.

BBC News - Dogs may have compulsory microchips, minister hints

I personally can't see how it'll stop dogs attacking. It will help trace owners and may be able to prosecute the owner, however what happening if owners don't change their details on it when they buy or sell a dog? Would the owner be let off? And this doesn't stop dogs attacking, it just does something afterwards which is not that good.

Should we also bring in licences and match microchip to licence?

Should we do what we do with cars, have compulsory licence, compulsory insurance, compulsory tax? But then people still drive cars without a licence, insurance, tax etc.

Should we bring in compulsory training? How could we reach every single dog owner? But I'm sure some dogs that have had puppy training do become aggressive.

Should we muzzle all dogs when out in public? This would certainly stop attacks, but its not very nice for good dogs to wear.

Should we start banning people from owning dogs, eg people below 25 years old can't own a large, powerful or bull breed? Or people below 18 years old owning any breed? For this to work, you'd need licences.

Or is the answer a combination of these methods?

Re: What should the government do about dangerous dogs?

Is the question not better like this…?

What should the government do about irresponsible and dangerous owners / breeders?

No Dog is born to be a killer! it is what people make out of them!!!
I personally don’t agree that they always pick on the dogs.

Re: What should the government do about dangerous dogs?

Microchip the stupid irresponsible owners.

The government need to be focusing on bad owners rather than dangerous dogs. Dogs are made dangerous by people IMO. No dog is born bad.

I agree with you seven pets this proposal will not stop dog attacks.

The responsible owners will abide by the law but irresponsible owners will not. How will they enforce/police this?

So I don’t know what the answer is. Something needs to be done obvsiouly.

All I know is dogs are being PTS all the time because of the way they have been brought up by irresponsible people. It’s the dogs that are suffering at the hands of irresponsible humans unfortunately.

Re: What should the government do about dangerous dogs?

I don't know? Would be the simple answer. Didn't they ban the AM Pit Bull at one stage?

Despite this ban many of them are still roaming the streets and many come via Ireland direct from Europe.

They come in as Boxer/Lab mixes and no one pays a blind bit of attention.

So what's the point?

Personally I do not have an issue with all dogs having to be muzzled in public- many seem to. It would save shed loads of grief.

Re: What should the government do about dangerous dogs?

I don't have the answer, but I think the law should be targeting the owners rather than specific breeds of dogs & microchipping just won't work- as has already been said, the responsible owners will comply, the rubbish owners will just either ignore it or give a false address

"Supporters say microchipping will help reduce dog attacks by making it easier to trace owners and speed up efforts to find new homes for stray animals."

If you even tried to put a muzzle on me I'd hate you for the rest of my days. A muzzle is representative of the statement that I am a potential danger or killer and therefore cannot be trusted.
I don't see why my natural freedoms should be penalised because of the actions of someone else?

REALLY? No this is a human putting emotions in that they perceive a dog to "think". Correctly introduced and trained a dog should see a muzzle as nothing but a positive thing.
