Do people still do this?

Rub their dogs noise in their feaces My mum told me her dad used to do this and I know that was quite commen knowledge back then but my dad still thinks you do that (until I told him that if you do the puppy will probably end up scared and poop in corners and the house will stink and told him a better way I've read) and my brother who's younger still thinks you rub your dogs nose in it and smack him to 'train' him, I was pretty much Hell No you stay away from my puppy, i'll train him myself

Not knowing any better, I try to see things from my pup's point of view, so let's see ...how would I feel about having my face shoved in poo and/or being hit...erm....?!*?

Re: Do people still do this?

yes sadly they do. Quite recently I was discussing house training with a friend who told me it took him ages to house train his JR and that he succeeded only when he "rubbed his nose in it" The sad fact is that this happened to coincide with the dog learning to be clean indoors and thus my friend is convinced he was right.

Re: Do people still do this?

My younger brother told me to do this when Blue had an accident on the floor (only a wee, but still!) He said "They'll smell the urine and know not to wee on the floor again..." Errrm no, they'll smell the wee and wonder why the smell is following them everywhere.
My older brother told me to show her the puddle and smack her, "She'll feel guilty and know not to do it again" NO!!! Dogs minds dont work that way, to her itll be like shes getting told off for looking at the puddle. He does this to his dog, and now if the poor dog has an accident, he wont go near my brother or look at the puddle because he knows if he looks at it he'll be smacked

Re: Do people still do this?

No never. I remember that being the done thing, but I have always thought its mean. Pups need to be shown the right thing to do, so taking them out and praising when they toilet has always been an obvious choice for me

Pushing face in their mess a shame for the dog glad you dont follow that method

Re: Do people still do this?

Yes people still do this people I know have recommended this as how to train Bella out of her (2!!) accidents.

Because that's how we all got toilet trained isn't it? We all got our faces rubbed into our nappies until we started using the toilet because it's so encouraging.

Can't stand people that think animals are lesser than us humans for some reason and so it's okay to treat them like.......... sorry can't even think what sort of living creature deserves to be beaten for training...no, wait, got one: paedophiles!

Sorry...bit of a rant there...guess you can see how I feel about it

I know how i'd feel My brother has worked with dogs as part of work experiance, surely he should have learnt something better than the 'old' ways, even my mum who was taught that's how you train your puppy not to go wasn't going to teach it that way

I'll be making sure everyone knows how to train the puppy correctly as i'm buying some puppy books for us all read

Teach puppy to go outside straight away in garden
Ignore 'accidents' clean up, no rubbing, no hitting
Take puppy straight outside if catching in the act, or after eating, playing, napping, say every 45minutes and praise, praise, praise.

Sounds about right?

Re: Do people still do this?

Yes they do. I was on the bus last night and some guy got on with a puppy jack russell and I got talking to him and he was going on about the dominance theory and how when his puppy poos or wees in the house he rubs her nose in it

I just looked at him in disgust.

Re: Do people still do this?

Millie never had her nosed rubbed in it but when we got her at 10 months she was still having occassional accidents.

But if we saw her do it I would immediately say to her' Millie whats this?' and point to it, she would come up to me all sheepish She knew she wasnt meant to lol.

Lol even now if you say 'Whats this Millie?' in a certain tone she goes into super cutey rolly over it wasnt me mode .

It wasnt ever meant as a punishment more of a - We know it was you type of thing lol.

The problem wasnt that she wasnt toilet trained though - it was confusion of home number at 10 months old and actually being allowed in the house Within a week 98% was outside.
