Re: Winter pups

Have not commented on this all day as I was so shocked that your pup is 5 months old and has not been for a walk yet and thought I'd better just not say anything as I couldn't think of anything positive to say but I've changed my mind as I'm still shocked and feel the need to say something!

I would think not taking him out at such a crutial age would cause more damage than a bit of chilly weather/cat collar/home-made harness/sock with holes in used as a jumper with a lead attached or something similar ever could. I just hope I'm wrong and you get out there now as much as possible to make up for lost time!

Re: Winter pups

I'm well aware that Joey being 5 months old and just getting into the world for a walk is bad and it'll be hard to socialise him. I'm going to start taking him out for 20-30 minutes every morning that I can. It's so ease for others to be critical of someone else's life when they don't know all the facts and can't put themselves into someone's else's situation. My medical conditions mean I can't always leave the house, which is why we chose a chihuahua as a breed that would work for us.
I was asking for advice, not to be spoken down to. No wonder people stop asking questions or don't come on here for advice when all some people want to do is preach and shame.

Re: Winter pups

Sorry to hear about your medical condition, I thought the reason you hadn't taken him out was because you couldn't find a harness to fit and you thought it was too cold. I'm sure you can understand why I would be shocked if those were the only two reasons why you hadn't walked him yet.

Re: Winter pups

Hi there
I have a chinese crested puppy called Dillon who is 12 weeks old now
I can sympathise, because he is still in a cat collar at the moment. Being walked in a thick fleece all in one.

I also have an adult male hairless chinese crested called Percy.
I have fleece outfits made special for my dogs so that I can take them out in freezing temperatures. I judge how many layers Percy will need by how many layers I am wearing, he basically needs one to two less than I have on.

The amount they are moving is important, I wouldnt for example sit and watch the world go by with the weather as it is now, they need to keep moving to keep warm.

I can link you to the lady who makes the fleeces for my dogs if you like, they are fantastic quality and she is a lovely lady.
I also know people that make collars and harnesses for tiny dogs.
Infact there is a lovely lady on here who could do that for you callled indi dog.

Re: Winter pups

I just didn't want to start sharing my personal life with people I don't know. It doesn't help that Joey has a wide chest and a small neck. I did try ferret and kitten harnesses but they weren't secure enough and I didn't want to walk him with just a collar cause I didnt want him choking. When he has a collar on he gets to go into the garden and attempt to play with our cats. I'm grateful and lucky that he is super friendly with people, cats, workmen and children. I have friends with dog friendly dogs so I play in having little meet ups on neutral ground.
I do understand your concern but my lack of socialisation hasn't been through choice. I do hope to make up for it though.

Re: Winter pups

Thanks Babycham2002 I'd really like that link. I have found a few websites that supply tops and fleeces in an extra small, although you can never have too many online shops in your bookmark folder even if it is for a puppy

Re: Winter pups

Im sure it wont be too bad with regards to his socialisation. Its great to hear you have friends with dogs who he can play with....TBH if they are too friendly with strange dogs they run the risk of being hurt in play as they are so tiny.
And if you find a harness to fit a teeny dog with a big ribcage and skinny neck then let me know too!!LOL

Re: Winter pups

Joey wears an H style harness by Rogz it's an extra small. I have to widen the chest straps and make the neck straps smaller but it seems to work. I'll post pictures/video on ur walk tomorrow.
