Unhappy My Rubbish Sketch!

Feel like I'm never going to be able to save up for a portrait of Charlie - it got me really down today. So I decided to doodle as therapy and this is what came out...I'm not good at drawing and definitely can't do shading or anything so it's just a rough sketch. But you can tell it's a dog at least!

It's based on this photo...thought it'd be better if I didn't even attempt eyes!

Anyone else out there want a dog portrait but can't have one? Share my woe...

I've got such a vivid memory of a pride of place portrait at my granddads house (sadly died a long time ago...) of a border terrier called Dodger (also obviously gone). It was a painting but so detailed and it showed dodger from the front and side. I remember its large brass frame. The artist had done it in person - I mean, not from a photo but from my granddads house and it was amazing. And as a child I used to be absolutely mesmerised by it.

Now I'm grown up with my own dog, I hope to be able to a portrait of Charlie one day thats just so beautiful I'll hang it long after Charlie has gone, just as my grandad did for Dodger. It's just one of those purchases that keeps getting pushed aside for practical things.

But on a positive - I'm not bad at taking photos so at the very least I can maybe get a large printed and frame that!

Sorry for the random post. I just think I needed to get it out of my head. Just having a down day. Off to make dinner...

Re: My Rubbish Sketch!

The outline is looking good - give it a go you might suprise yourself
The worse that can happen is you don't like it - but you can learn from your mistakes and try again.

I'm sure some of the PF resident artists could give you some advice

Re: My Rubbish Sketch!

For "just a doodle" that's really good! go you.
I tried to draw Indi, it didn't look anything like him.

I'd love a portrait of Indi but for all I save up the money always needs to be spent elsewhere, and the same as you I take a million photos and he's got his own photo frame with several frames joined together.

Re: My Rubbish Sketch!

That's good!! Just have a go at the shading, keep practising and before you know it you won't need anyone else to do a portrait for you, you'll be able to do the perfect one yourself!

Re: My Rubbish Sketch!

Thanks for all the nice replies guys

I used to draw a lot, but more cartoony sketches than real-life. I think you can see that in my drawing. I just can't do the fine detail, never could. I could maybe colour it in with coloured pencils, but again, it'd be more cartoony than adding any detail.

*sigh* I'm just feeling really down today and this is just what I happened to be thinking about I guess
