Dogs off their lead!

Hi all,

I'm a new member to these forums but would like to have a rant over something!

One thing that annoys me more then anything while walking my pooch is other dog owners who let their dogs run wild off the lead! I'm fully aware its not always the dogs fault, but really do think some owners should have a little more control over their dog.

I find most dogs are fine if they do come up to my dog but some can get out of hand and play a bit on the rough side.

I also find that some dog owners don't even bother to come and get their dog and often just walk in the other direction.

Does anyone else find this a bit annoying at times? Rant over!

What do you mean by running wild,do you mean just coming up to your dog or by wild do you mean running around off lead?

Re: Dogs off their lead!

I have to say if dogs are off lead I usually assume they are going to be ok with my dogs, having said that since getting Bella I almost always let them approach slowly or on the lead as she still doesnt always greet other dogs properly, she often thinks running up to dogs with her tongue hanging out and giving them sloppy kisses on their faces is the right way to go about greeting new friends. I do let Henrick greet other off lead dogs whilst off the lead because I know he greets them calmy and if they start trouble he will come away, neither of my dogs are ever more than a couple of feet away from me anyway though, unless they are fetching a ball.

Yes thats the thing having once had an ill dog it does make you nervous, but on the other hand i do love dogs to run up when they just want to play but then mine are really accepting of them and just let them join in.

Re: Dogs off their lead!

really does my head in

i have a very nervous dog and sometimes i end up in a right knot with the lead...and, quite often the other dog owner finds it highly amusing .....because she should be a hard knock

Re: Dogs off their lead!

When my dogs are off lead to some they may look like they are running wild, but they are just having zoomies !!!! lol lol but if i see a dog thats on lead i call them back, if they see another dog off lead they normally go up to it ,but then go off for more zoomies, more often than not people will stop and say "how good it is to see 2 dogs having such fun"

I love to see it too there can be as many as 7dogs including mine all playing together, its great to see, but i know what people mean when they have nervous, ill or not so friendy dogs it can spoil a walk.

I never mind dogs playing with mine and i always invite people with pups to let them play as mine are really good with them and very sociable so if it helps socialise them to hopefully becoming of similar temprement then ime all for it.

Re: Dogs off their lead!

I am finding it hard to gauge whether we are talking about out of control dogs or those that come up to say hi.

Whilst I know there are issues etc, Boris likes to say hello to other dogs and I am constantly looking out for him and what he and the other dog are doing. If the other owner asks me to take my dog away from theirs I do it, whether I think there was an issue or not... And regardless of whether they are polite or not to me.

Boris is calm and will jog up to other dogs, but he is only a nutter when it is a dog that he has met before; otherwise he is calm, courteous and doesn't play unless the other dog has already started, or they have given a full greeting. Boris responds to my commands and I have got to know some of the dogs dry well, and when they are with walkers in the week, they play but sometimes I stop him and call him to me, because I know that they owner may not know my dog and freak out.

I generally find that most people have the grace to tell me if there is a problem, and other wise I am pretty good at stopping things when needs be. Boris is also fairly socially aware and knows the signs when the other dog isn't interested... I do however dismay when there are dogs going absolutely bonkers because it is clear they are not getting enough stimulation, which is entirely I feel the owners fault... And a reason why some think Beagles are untrainable and uncontrollable. That isn't the case at all...

Today was different, because due to his MRI we hadn't been to the park for a few days and he got excited to be back. Luckily the first dog we saw was a Basset that Boris knows and loves and a dog that charged up to us, so he was then back to his normal self.

Re: Dogs off their lead!

Really winds me up, took 1 of mine out to a park the other day had to cut the walk short because so many dogs around running over to other dogs if they'd have come up to mine she'd have screamed the park down she needs a lot more socialisation but everytime we have an experience like this it sets her back again
