worms?

last night sophie was up being sick, i put it down to a bone my mum had gotten her that she ate, something she has never had before, shes fine again now. although a little tired.
but my dad just told me he seen something dark red and long hanging from near her bum which she cleaned up herself, ive not seen it, im googling around trying to see what it could possibly be could it be some form of worm? i last wormed her in november with drontol worming tablets. or could it of just been some of the meat from the bone that wasnt digested properly
could it be anything to do with her spay?

rang vets about vomiting they said since shes fine now and i have an appointment monday to just keep her on light plain food eggs, chicken and make sure shes drinking, and its most likely been the bone.

Re: worms?

It was maybe a bit of undigested bone that cut her on the way out. A mixture of mucous and blood? Or did she have too much offal? That goes mucousy and horrible..

Doesn't sound like worms.

Re: worms?

No real advice, but I thought worms were white is it possible that she has been chewing on a toy or something and swallowed some red fabric or something?

Intestinal worms as far as I know are white/creamy coloured, or as far as Roundworm and tapeworm species go which are the most common dogs get.

It couls possibly something she has eaten and not digested and passed through. Has she got any material type toys like raggers and things that may be red?

Have you checked her for signs of bleeding, swelling, discharge, anything that looks inflammed, either from the anal area or the vulva.

Re: worms?

yeah i thought they were pale aswell but thought best check
apparently there are something called bloodworms i found when i stupidly googled think they are only from mosquito bites. and guess they wouldnt come out that way.

it wasnt stringy and didnt look like a material, apparently, it looked like a worm but thinking about it she recently had a toy she chewed that had red ropey stuff i had to take off of her so it could be that
or the bone was a red colour too so hopefully that

just with the vomiting as well was getting a bit worried about her.

theres no swelling that i have noticed although she is still a bit swollen around her incision but i imagine that would be normal still, she still has her stitches in. and there has been no discharge or bleeding that i can tell, she just seems really off she was perfectly fine until the bone last night though then a few hours after eating it she was really quite and then sick so hopefully its just not agreed with her.

Re: worms?

Will say make sure everyone in the family knows never to give a dog any bone which is cooked. They can be extremely dangerous.

I would also avoid leg bones from large herbivores such as cattle but that's personal opinion and it's due to potential problems with teeth rather than it passing through.

Just keep an eye on the suture line, there should be no increasing redness, the stitches should not be reall taunt and pulling, obviusly no oozing or discharge, a small amount of post op swelling is not unusual. The area shouldnt feel very hot either, or there shouldnt be any redness that is increasing and spreading out from the wound.

What sort of bone was it? Ive assumed it was uncooked, but I notice Goblin mentioned cooked bones, and I agree dogs should never have cooked bones,
it makes the bone brittle and liable to splinter and also be sharp which can cause damage internally and passing out.
