What games do you play with your dogs?

I am looking for games to play with Terence.

He gets over-excited easily, so I am after gentle games that tire him out mentally rather than physically. I also want to avoid games where he learns to use his physical strength to his advantage. My husband still plays tuggie with him, but I don't really want to play that with him.

So, any good ideas?

Re: What games do you play with your dogs?

my man play fights with out dogs but i wouldn't because i would get overpowered but they love it

i prefer a good bit of fetch with whatever comes to hand, i quite like getting them to understand a ball is different to a jingly or a squeaky and then hiding specific things about the place and getting them to find it, or you can put a treat under a cup next to a couple other empty cups and get them to pick the right one. anything which involves them thinking

Re: What games do you play with your dogs?

We play alot of chase & tug but we do also play 'find it' which was particularly useful when Roxy hurt her paw.

We usually start with them finding just one object but it can then be object specific like a ball or a toy or a slipper. They love it although Toby does get a bit upset if Roxy finds all her things before he does

Roxy like playing 'leave it' as well for some reason, she'll bring the toy over & we have to throw it then tell her to leave. After a few mins of being calm she runs to retrieve then starts again.

I have started playing a game of getting several cups, hiding a treat under one, mixing them up then getting the dogs to see if they can identify the right cup for the treat.

So, for "Find it", how do you start introducing it? Should he see when I am hiding his ball, say, so that he knows what the ball is??

Re: What games do you play with your dogs?

Find it is one of Tummels favourite games...i do it with food instead of toys as he's not bothered about them. What i did was put Tummel in his crate and started by putting the food in plain sight, then gradually moved it so now all the pieces are well hidden, you can also play this in the garden as grass is excellent at hiding food

I also do a training game with Tummels food, just going over the basics and he gets a piece for every 2/3 commands he does correctly.

Fetch is good for mentally tiring a dog but i can't help as Tummel won't fetch. What i do sometimes is leave a piece of food out and he has to do commands for other pieces while leaving the obvious food on the floor...he works very har to ignore it

We play fetch. We do proper retrieval training but I am looking for things that we can play in the house, in the evening when the kids are asleep. I shall try this find it game. Terence might like that.
