Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

After reading yet more god awful tails of breeding for cash, and general cruelty and abandonment I was thinking would it stop these total losers and idiots from owning dogs if there was a anual charge for a licence for you to have dogs, that you had to apply for and got home checked for like, enough space, time, money ect and had to get approved for .... just a thought. If it was made not as easy to own a pet (not just for dogs, like a pet licence), would it stop the evil that happens?

surley people wouldnt pay out a lot o cash just to abuse, kill or dump the pet they are paying a fair bit for......

the only down side would be for the poor sods like us that are good honest owners that treat our animals well (too well in my case )..... but if it stopped all this unwanted breeding for cash and the RSPCA cases I would be willing.

Whats anyone else think?

Re: Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

I have to have a license living here, it is easy to get and wouldn't / doesn't prevent anything.

I am very much against a home check as people that could offer a dog a perfectly good home could fail. For instance how much space is 'enough'? How much money is 'enough?' Space and money are also no indicators of whether a dog will be trained, cared for, well fed etc.

Only those who are law - abiding would apply for a license, those who aren't wouldn't.

Sadly not IMO.

How would they police it? The RSPCA don't seem capable of closing down puppy farms as it is and I can just imagine a Jobsworth arriving at the local illegal travellers site to check whether their dogs are licenced.

All it would do is penalise the good and responsible dog owners.

Well that's my opinion anyway.

A car licence doesn't stop idiots from driving irresponsibly.

I doubt that these scrotes are going to be that bothered about not buying a licence anyway.

The only answer is neutering and I don't mean the dogs!

Re: Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

In principle it sounds a good idea but as a lot of these irresponsible ......'s use these dogs as status symbols and weapons I can really see them trotting along to the post office and buying a licence.

As already said it is the decent law abiding amongst us that would pay and the money would just disappear into the Governments coffers rather than making any real difference to dogs.

Also under your criteria I would probably fail a home check too!

no, if you can't be bothered to put a collar and tag on your dog, why would you get a licence??

Re: Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

I wouldn't like to see it at all for any reason.

Just another way for someone to tell anyone they can or can't have something. Far too much of that already and no need for anymore.

Re: Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

Nope, they simply wouldn't bother getting a license.

As for home checks, I've very recently failed one and had the dog taken away because I have "too much stuff" whatever that means How much space is enough? How much money is enough? How much time is enough? I'm sure everybody has different opinions on this and many good homes would be ruled out for no good reason. And what would happen to those dogs who lived in homes where it was decided the family didn't have enough of something to get the license?

Re: Dog Licence? would this stop idiots having dogs?

No dog licences in the way they are proposing won't help a bit.

The only thing I can think of that may make a difference is to ban puppy farms and create a breeders licence then ban breeding by anyone that doesn't have the licence. Breeders would then be responsible for vetting buyers. That way it would be much easier to shut down and prosecute the 'back street' breeders that don't give a damn who their selling to or what happens to the dogs. Then hopefully it would cut down on the number of dogs that get abused, dumped or end up so imbalanced then hurt people and other animals.
