Question Would I be allowed to get a rescue?

Hi
Just wondering, would I be allowed to get a rescue with an unspayed bitch in the house already? the rescue would probably have been 'done' or be another bitch.

I'm not actually getting one anytime soon - just wondering as may consider it in the future.

Re: Would I be allowed to get a rescue?

I would not think that would be a problem. However each rescue have their own rules, but like I say I can not see it being a problem. Think there are a few members connected to rescues here, so they might be able to give you a clearer picture.

Edit - Sled dog hotel has a better answer than I do The fact both would be female could be a factor in how they get on if one or both are unspayed, never thought of that.

Rescues vary, but I believe I have seen posts on here that certain rescues insist that an existing dog is already neutered or spayed.

Its true most rescues do spay and neuter before rehoming except when the pup or dog is too young to be spayed and neutered, then most insist that as soon as they are old enough they have to be as part of the conditions of adoption.

The reason for the insistance on spaying isnt just the obvious male/female and preventing puppies though. If you have same sex dogs, and you are moving in another entire female onto another females territory or an un neutered male onto another un neutered males territory, it can cause problems in the way of competing and fighting. Problems can also happen with one neutered or spayed and the other not too. Bitches for example can be absolutely fine and then one comes into season they will have problems. Males can kick off once a younger uneutered one becomes sexually mature where they were fine before. Uneutered males are more likely to fight if there is a female in season in the area, where the rest of the time they can be OK.

For these reasons a lot of rescues do insist on neutering and spaying, probably to reduce the chances of failure and problems in the future when rehoming. by having both spayed and neutered it can and often does reduce the problem of any sex based behaviour and upset between two same sex dogs.

Re: Would I be allowed to get a rescue?

Many rescues will only rehome if your bitch is spayed- even if considering rehoming a spayed bitch to you.

However, there are MANY rescues, and with a bit of looking I'm sure you could find one which will listen to your reasons for choosing to not spay, rather than making a sweeping decision.

There are different reasons that a rescue will ask that any current dogs are spayed, but the saller rescues are generally speaking more likely to go through each prospective owner case by case.

Re: Would I be allowed to get a rescue?

I've come across a few rescues that would not let us rehome due to Jack not being neutered, and some that didn't mind because the bitch they would be providing would be neutered as part of their re homing policy.

I've found the latter to be in more abundance, so I don't think you'll have too many issues.

I do not even understand why that should be an issue if you do not want entire male?
more of a question of finding a dog that willget along with yours!

Re: Would I be allowed to get a rescue?

I adopted both of my dogs from there and I still do a bit of volunteering for them - as far as I remember they do insist on other pets being neutered, when I've done homechecks it's something that I've needed to check, but they are quite flexible. For instance I live in a flat and work full time and they were happy to home dogs to me so it's worth contacting them and asking.

ETA: Just checked my homecheck form and adoption paperwork and actually it isn't a question on there - it was actually vacinations of other pets that needed to be checked not neutering. These are about 6 months old though so it may have changed since then.

Contact them and make a general enquiry, mention you are not in a position right now but planning/researching for the future. If you have a sofa or a bed then as far as the Greyhound itself is concerned, you have room

But go ask Kent Greyhound Rescue, least you will then know their policy.

Edit - There you go, the reply above is helpful. See you never know what connections members here have

Different Rescues have different policies. The best thing is to ring round and find out.
