Pet Corrector and Birds

This is a question I have concerning the pet corrector spray - We have recently got a German Sheppard puppy who is in need of this spray to correct his biting / anything it says on the tin the spray is supposed to correct. The problem we have and before my parents use this. They Own a parrot a African Grey they are very sensitive to sprays and you have to be very careful what you use around them. We have checked with the dog trainer who we see once a week for our puppy's training and he has said its safe to use but I want to make sure so If anyone has used this spray in front of a parrot or anything that would help me find out if its safe or not then that would be a fantastic help

Thanks John

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

Havent got a clue if it is OK for parrots, one thing I would say though, is have you tried any other forms of stopping the puppy biting first? Im assuming you mean the usual puppy mouthing and nipping? Only mentioned as the pet correctors have been known to cause problems, especially in a puppy who may be going through one ot the critical stages of developement fear periods. used on a pup who is going through this or nervous type in general it has been known to case more problems then it solves sometimes.

I used a pet corrector when I had budgies and it was safe for them

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

I don't know about the parrot sorry but just wanted to say that I don't feel that such things should be used except possibly in exceptional circumstances. I believe puppies should be trained using positive methods and find it hard to see why a puppy would need a pet corrector spray used on it.

What exactly are the problems you are having? I'm sure if you ask we can give you lots of ideas about how to deal with them without having to resort to frightening your puppy out of it's wits every time it does something you don't like. Remember, he's only a baby!

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

How about training him instead?

Dogs learn much faster when you give them a behaviour to do instead of the unwanted rather than just telling them no.

I think you are going to have a fearful dog if you keep using the spray every time he does something wrong

Ps- get a new dog trainer! one who uses positive re-inforcement before you ruin your puppy.

He's got a habit of biting a lot and playing - back chatting if you firmly say No! to him we have tried to do the method of making Yelping noises. it does nothing now he ignores it arms folded across and turn away ignoring him only makes him bite your legs (that hurts)

As for the spray its a last resort we have not used it yet for the reason we dont want to cause issues to the Bird as well as Max (the puppy) and even more to the amusement of much the Parrot has copyed the Yelp noise much to the delight of my parents

How long have you been trying using these methods for? Sometimes it takes a while for it to click with puppies and you need to be consistent.

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

put him out the room for a short time out when he does this. puppies hate to be excluded and he will soon realise the behaviour gets him properly ignored. behind a baby gate is even better as he can see u ignoring him.

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

I used one around parrots and it didn't hurt them. I wouldn't use one for its intended purpose though

Re: Pet Corrector and Birds

I have a 7 month old German shepherd puppy and she used to bite, a lot!
Does she have plenty of other things to chew? The things that worked best for me was either redirecting her to something she was allowed to chew, or stop ALL communication when she put her mouth on us, stood up folded arms look at the ceiling! If she bites your legs instead I found it easier to remove myself from the room. How old is she? I know when we got kiva she was very young so before I tried stopping the biting all together I only used to yelp if she did it hard, then started lowering the tolerance until it was any time she put teeth on skin.
And they do grow out of it to a certain extent too, as I said kiva is 7 months now and will mouth occasionally, but it is just mouthing very rare she closes her mouth on us.
I really think you should give yourself and your puppy a chance to work through this together before you use something that will scare her. And also I wouldn't use it for multiple problems, you may end up with a dog with lots worse issues than just normal puppy biting! And you don't want a GSD with issues lol

ETA just reread your post and realised your dog is a 'him' I do apologise
