Cornwall and Devon in July 2012

Hello everyone!

My partner, our dog Bonnie, and I want to go to Devon and Cornwall for two weeks this July. Can anybody here give us some recommendations regarding what to see and do there, apart from all the usual touristy stuff?

We are thinking about renting a cottage or flat for a week each and explore Devon and Cornwall from there. Is that a good idea, or should we make a round trip and spend each night in a different place? It's really difficult for us to imagine the distances in SW-England, as we've never been there.

We're looking for places (preferably beaches) where we can let Bonnie off the lead for some time, so that she can run around, play, and stretch her muscles after a day of touring various "cities" or gardens with us. She's no hunter and pretty well behaved.

Looking forward to your replies, Juergen

Here's a website that tells you what beaches you can take your dog onto in the summer.
Beaches that dogs are allowed on all year

Also my preference would be to rent a cottage or similar as a base. That way you are not looking for somewhere that takes dogs each day.

Where in Devon/Cornwall are you looking to stay?

If you put in pet friendly places to stay on search engine it will come up with lots of places.

Depends in Devon/Cornwall in summer about beaches as we have found that alot of beaches won't let dogs on until end of september or they only have little area.

Castles are great for dogs my Duke loves castles and forts and the English Heritage one's let them in and some of the others.

Have fun wherever you go

Re: Cornwall and Devon in July 2012

We haven't decided on a particular area so far. We want to spend a week somewhere on the coast around Torquay, that's one of our ideas. We might go into Dartmoor and Exeter from there, maybe even the northern coast of Devon. My partner still needs to finish the list with the places and areas she wants to go to.
Looking at my list, most of the places I want to go to are located on the southern coast of Cornwall. Ilfracombe and Hartland Point are the two most northerly places on my list so far.

I've already found quite a couple of site for dog-friendly holidays, so we should be able to find something somewhere. If there's anybody from Devon or Cornwall here, I'm open to your suggestions and maybe we can even meet for a walk?

Has info on which beaches have summer dog restrictions

ETA... Some beaches get mega busy that you would be mad to take your dog to during July... Though depending on where you go there are lots and lots of little coves (locals beaches ) that will be alot queiter...

Go to Canonteign Falls.
It is really good. It has the highest waterfall in Britain I think and I would highly recommend it. The owners have a massive harlequin great dane. I would highly recommend it especially for dogs too!

Re: Cornwall and Devon in July 2012

You wont find many beaches in torbay from may to sept that allow dogs on

But you will find lots of places to visit as a holiday destination such as Brixham, paignton, Torquay, Newton abbot, Teignmouth ,Dawlish and Exeter or plymouth and or course Dartmoor is great for well behaved dogs as lots of moorland animals up there

The southhams are better for beaches for dogs such as slapton or beesands, kingsbridge area with excellent beaches and lovely area for walking.

Cornwall to the Border from Devon such as Torbay is approx 30 miles and from the border into cornwall as an example st austell is 45miles to give you an idea of distance.

There are dog friendly b&b's in Paignton that I can recommend that are by a dog friendly beach and there is a restaurant by the same beach where you can sit outside with the dogs.

There's a fort not far from Paignton can't remember what it's called that's great for the dogs.
