The bad, ugly and good of today's main walk.

I've been trying to reconcile today's walk in my head. trying to grasp on the positive but I think i need a little rant to get the bad out of my head.

Walking Tinks on one of our favourite walks. Nice and hilly not the most popular area or most well travelled paths. We were walking over a nice big grassy area i sometimes use as a training area in summer. when i just had an uncomfortable feeling. Looked behind us to see a GSD stiff and staring hackles raised (no owner in sight). I clipped Tink's lead on and adjusted my direction so i could see this dog out of the corner of my eye and continued calmly on our way. Suddenly a voice starts bellowing from the trees , a panicked tone. no reaction from the dog. The owner calls a few more times, still no movement. Then the GSD charges Tink, body block but he manages to reach around me and nip her. I yell the most blood curdling " OI!" and the dog runs back to its owner. Who shouts a rather cowardly " sorry" from his hiding place in the trees 100 yards away.

That was the bad, now for the ugly! me turning into a fishwife yelling at him! Telling him that "my dog has been attacked by a gsd and the last thing she needs is idiots like him and his out of control dog! and that he needs his dog on a longline if he has no flipping recall." Cue him scuttling off into the trees.

Now finally for the good is Tink looked at me like i was a God after I shouted and the dog ran. Shook the whole thing off in minutes and was wagging and sniffing and like the whole thing hadn't happened. Even a couple of months ago this would have caused a wholesale shutdown and weeks to get back on track.

If you got this far give yourself a cookie I feel so much better for getting that all out.

That sounds awful; can't imagine how you felt after what happened to Tink - bet you were pretty scared .

I don't think that you telling the man exactly what you thought was a bad thing; maybe, just maybe it will make him have a good hard think. Or maybe not .

And lastly, I am so pleased to hear how well Tink coped with it all .

I'm just glad to read that Tinks recovered so quickly from a potentially very nasty experience. If you hadn't got her back on the lead it could have been very different.

You are quite within your rights to shout fishwife like at the totally inconsiderate owner of the GSD. I think he got off lightly in the circumstances. I'm glad Tinks thinks your a hero.

Re: The bad, ugly and good of today's main walk.

Thanks for the replies.

I used to get scared but now I just get highly indignant then go a bit wobbly once the adrenaline has subsided. I'm not a shouty person I'm not one that looks to have it out when a quiet chat can solve things amicably. So i was almost in shock as I'm stood there bellowing into the distance. Now i've had a sit down and am all calm.

Damn i'm so proud of Tinker. Not once has she shown any agression on or off lead and that look she gave me. well money can't buy the feeling you have when your dog looks at you that way, saying i trust you i know you will protect me.

Although OH said Tink thinks "why have a human and bark yourself!"

That brought a little lump to my throat

I'm so pleased for you both that it ended the way it did, it could have been so much worse I also don't think there was anything wrong with you giving the owner a piece of your mind, sounds well and truely deserved to me.

Give Tink a cuddle from me x

Re: The bad, ugly and good of today's main walk.

Had this in town with a westie (had a lead on but was not being held) who then proceeded to throw himself at Maya, who at that point was having none of this so turned around, towerd over him giving quite the growl and then headbutted him. He ran back to his owner whimpering and crying, the owner bright red fumbling to grab the lead while mumbling sorry he thinks he's a big dog and then hurried off.

Well done to you though, bless I know you've worked hard with Tinks and defintly didn't need some idiot and his dog to take things back a step

awww, good little Tink is a trooper.

anyone who helps to reinforce 'my dog doesn't like german shepherds' makes me blood boil, grrrrrrr. they are such easy dogs to train from my experience why are there so many people who can't manage it mad:

Re: The bad, ugly and good of today's main walk.

I cringe when I read storied about out of control gsds, I hear of so many dogs traumatised by gsds that I tend to be over cautious when my two meet other dogs. Glad it didnt end too badly and you got to maybe encourage the owner to be a bit more responsible next time.

Good girl Tink. (And, for what it's worth, I think the guy in the trees deserved everything he got - and more, it could have been worse, he could have met me!!!)
