Unhappy Puppy Sickness

Hi. Yesterday my 15 week puppy was sick in the afternoon. Following that she kept trying to be sick a number of times but nothing really came up. She seemed OK in herself - a little quiet maybe but nothing dramatic. We have got up this morning to a very bouncy and very hungry puppy. Can anyone advise what I should feed her if anything. I have just cooked her some rice so hopefully that will stay in but I really am not sure what to do for the best. Also her poos have all been fine not a problem there. If she is sick again I will have to take her to the vets I assum as persistant sickness is a sign of a problem surely?

Re: Puppy Sickness

As your puppy is so young, I would take her to the vets just in case. She could have just eaten something which has upset her tummy and it'll pass, but better safe than sorry.

Re: Puppy Sickness

you could try a bland diet of boiled chicken or boiled fish with rice in small meals, would however also recommend that you have her checked by your vet just to be on the safe side puppies have a horrible habbit of picking things up and eating things they shouldn't. If you are at all concerned take her to the vet, the cost of a consultation is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Thumbs up Re: Puppy Sickness

What is she normally fed, what was in the vomit?

Has there been any events that might have caused this, play too soon after feeding?

There can be different reasons for a dog to vomit, illness, ingesting a chemical or poison, eating too much too fast, making herself sick by eating long grass.

The day after such an event we might feed the normal food - but a small portion. See how it goes, if all is well you can give a small second portion later, after an hour maybe?

Monitor with rest and recuperation.

Re: Puppy Sickness

Thanks for the response. She has kept her rice in from breakfast and has since had some plain scrambled egg and all seems well so far. No long grass from yesterday but she is a bit of a scavenger so it could be that she has picked up something untoward. When she was sick it was undigested puppy food that came up and not much more. Poo's are still scarce but fine but do have a strange smell to them. That said I wouldn't normally inspect that closely so this could be normal! Whilst typing this have just had to recue an item of my underwear from her that was on the radiator - obviously on the mend.

Puppies and dogs often do one offs, and chuck up food for no apparent reason my one whos nearly 6 did the same with his breakfast yesterday and nothing since and the others have done it occasionally. If its a one off and not that long after eating and almost like it went in, it usually is they have eaten too fast and run around.

As long as she is keeping food down still going to the toilet, is lively full of energy, interested in her surrounding and eating and drinking fine I wouldnt be panicking to be honest.

If she carrys on being sick, especially if its unproductive, ie trying and nothing comes up. If she is straining and staining and not passing faeces or stops passing them altogether. Becomes lethargic, uninterested, doesnt want to eat or drink, becomes agitated restless, doesnt sleep relaxed and peaceful on her side, but lays in the position like an egptian spinx, and especially if the tummy becomes very hard rounded and bloated and tight like a drumskin then is the time to worry. These are things that can indicate something ingested and stuck
or something called bloat, both can be life threatening especially bloat and requires urgent vet attention or they both can actually.

Continous vomitting where nothing will stay down and especially if accompanied by diarrhoea, can obviously indicate a bug or sorts, something dangerous eaten or a bacterial or viral infection. They too can be dangerous if prolonged and the pup or dog is losing fluid quicker then they are replaced or you cant get fluids in at all. That can be a veterinary emergency as well, as dehydration can be a killer even quicker in very young pups or old ailing dogs, in fact an age.

Just mentioned out what to look for as its always handy to know.
