Re: doggy insurance

I have Animal Friends. I haven't made a claim for the dogs...but I have for the cats and it was S L O W getting the money. That said, the people were friendly, and are always helpful on the phone and it did arrive in full, no problems - I just had to ring a few times. It would be easier to have one that paid quicker, and I probably wouldn't choose them again.

Also, the vet deals direct with some companies like Petplan - and that would have been really handy, much easier than me paying the money and waiting for the insurance company to pay me back. It might be worth checking out who your vet recommends as being good to deal with too.

Re: doggy insurance

Another vote for Argos, we have platinum insurance which costs about £20 a month. Last year we had to claim as Jess had Hip Dysplasia and needed a hip replacement costing over £5k in total, Argos covered everything without any question or delay.

My only fear was how much my premiums would go up the following year so when the envelope for renewal came through I braced myself to find they'd increased by the huge sum of £2

I thought it was excellent service and wouldn't hesitate in recommending them.

A good way is often to ask your vets if they accept direct payment and if they do ask what companies, and get quotes from them. Vets are not going to wait around for ages to get paid and spend time on repeatedcalls chasing payment and quibbling about amounts so likely a good indication.

Make sure though who ever you go with that its a life long or life time policy. There are usually various amounts that you can insure for a year monetary wise, obviously the higher the amount insured for the higher the premium. Ths type of poilcy, however, means that you will have ongoing cover should your pet develope an illness that is ongoing, has an accident with later complications or an illnesss that re-occurs. Each and every year as long as you stay with them the amount insured for will be re-instated in full no matter what claims you have had the year before.

Some policies look like good cover money wise and may seem cheaper, but a lot are only limited to 12mths payout, which means that if the condition is ongoing, you get complications later or it re-occurs after 12mths hard luck no more payouts. Another type is an amount per condition, and there is no time limits, but once you have used up the whole amount in money allocated then again you wont get paid out any more on that type of illness or condition.
Remember too, that anything on your pets records wether previously claimed for or not, before you take out a policy or if you change to another company further down the line, will not be paid out it will be classed as a pre-exisiting condition. So its important to get the right policy from the start.

Its because a lot of people dont do their research at the beginning they often end up stuck and find they are not covered so check it all out throughly before you commit.

Re: doggy insurance

I have a website (see sig below) that only shows companies that have been investigated to pay out / give good service. I started it after I was screwed by, of all people, the Kennel Club. Avoid them. Avoid E&L. Be aware that some aren't the fastest payers and also READ THE POLICY before buying. In most cases if you buy online you'll get a discount.
