Why would a rescue ask this?

I saw a dog on Dogs Blog this morning and went to the rescue's page and the rehoming form. One of the questions asked about previous animals you've had (not current) and if they were spayed/neutered and they would need vet confirmation. Why would they ask this?

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

Thats a bit strange Id understand if it was current animals or if you were being asked to have the rescue neutered yourself.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

I never understand that. If the rescue dog is neutered, why does it matter whether your current (or non-current dogs in this case) are neutered or not? If the rescue dog is neutered, then there will be no puppies from the rescue dog.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

I presume it's because neutering dogs is seen as the 'responsible' thing to do and by having your current dog(s) neutered proves that you are responsible.

Load of crap though IMO - I could give a rescue dog a good home but sounds like this place wouldn't allow it because I have entire dogs - yet the only reason I've kept them entire is because I believe it's better for their health.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

I read the 'what happened to your prebious animals'
question as to mean, did you rehome them? did you have them pts? did they lead a long life ,
but the neutering thing is strange and can only presume its as sixstar said and that its seen as the responsible thing to do maybe
thanksfully the chinese crested rescue that I foster for understand that the fact that I have entire dogs does not make me an evil, irresponsible human being!

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

I would think, not having been in the rescue area that questions like this point towards a particular "type" of person and their overall viewpoints. We haven't neutered Nelson on the advice of the vets but Emma has been. Daisy will be shortly. She was a rescue and it was part of the conditions to having her we would get her seen to. Vet confirmation is going a bit far though especially as it could be years ago.

Although it was asking about current dogs as well they asked about previous dogs. So we'd have to declare OH's Ridgeback who was PTS two years ago was not neutered. I can't see how it's relevant.

It's academic anyway as they don't rehome to workers, they even seem reluctant with part-time workers. I was just curious.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

And we wonder why there are so many dogs needing homes. This could put some very good owners off applying.

So long as the dog they are getting is neutered or will be neutered.

Some rescues prefer potential adopters to have a history of neutering their animals, current dogs too. Sometimes it's just data mining/so they can ask your opinion on why those dogs were not neutered. Past neutering status is rarely as important as current.

I completely understand wanting current dogs to be neutered. It falls in line with rescue policy - if there are medical reasons for dogs having not been neutered that is different to not having them neutered due to personal preference.

Did the wording specifically want vet confirmation of past dog neuter status, or was the sentence structured in such a way this could be a misunderstanding? At most I would have thought there's be a time limit for vet confirmation, as others have said it can get tricky to produce confirmation for previous dogs. A few rescues, to save space, will request past/present dog ownership in the same box and only expect vet confirmation for current/recent dogs.

This is the wording:

Q1. Other dogs inc ages, sex, neutered/spayed, rescued:
We do not rehome where resident dogs are not neutered or spayed.

Q2. Previous dogs owned? Did they remain with you for life? (If not please state reasons):
Were they neutered/spayed? (please give vet details for confirmation):
