Great post - that's what I've been trying to say and couldn't despite more rambling posts...

I agree 100%. Different animals and people need, and can offer different things and matching the right pet to the right person is a more personalised and complex process than fence heights and working hours.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

Reading all this makes me wonder whether Wood Green are fussier than they used to be. I know three people who have got dogs from Wood Green.

One got the dog as a puppy, gave him back at 9 months because she couldn't housetrain him.

One gave their lovely collie x bitch to Wood Green, because she kept getting out and turning up at my house after I looked after her for a fortnight. Then they got another dog from them as a puppy, gave him back because they decided he was too much of a tie. When the teenage daughter, who didn't live with them, made a fuss they were going to the shelter to get him back. They had told the shelter they were emigrating, were going to tell them they had changed their minds. I rang and warned them they were coming.

One got a dog from Wood Green, full grown, never had a dog before, kept him for about four weeks them gave him back because "he kept looking at me".

This is all a long time ago, when they had dogs at the Heydon shelter. With people like this about, I am not surprised they have become fussy, but they seem to have gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.

I don't know, my neighbour has two from Wood Green although I don't think they found it difficult they did spend quite some time getting the right dog. My original post wasn't about Wood Green.

I am not going to do something that I see as detrimental to a dog's health in order to take on another dog - if neutering becomes necessary for any other reasons (medical or behavioural, then I will of course have it done).

The idea of neutering from your POV is to prevent accidents, but I see it as a much more complex issue than simply that. I do see myself as a responsible owner, and do my very best to prevent accidents, such as having a solid 6.5ft fence and side gate which I secure with a padlock. The only time I have been truly worried is when a woman let her dog run up to us then shouted from afar that I should be careful if my dog was entire as hers was in heat - but I refuse to neuter to cater for the stupidity of others.
yes i agree i think the problem is not everyone i as responsible as you lol

Which is why rescues should look at individual cases a little more carefully I think as questionnaires are impersonal and don't always give the full picture. It just seems a shame that good homes may be 'lost' on the basis of some tick boxes - although I do know that many rescues are stretched in terms of finance and staffing and all this takes time.

Re: Why would a rescue ask this?

This is why i foster for small rescues I'm not keen on the bigger ones they can be quite discriminatory of people
