Post Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

Can someone please tell me why microchipping is not compulsory? and why it is not common practice by vets to check every dog when visiting to see

1) If they are microchipped, if not should insist in getting it done.
2) Check to make sure the microchip is working.
3) Stolen dogs can be returned to their rightful owners.

My daughters dog Lucy a Saluki X Lurcher went missing within seconds of going out of sight at dog show we attended in June 2010 a day before her 13 birthday.

We have spent countless days looking for her and troll through loads of websites in hope we find Lucy, but the worst thing is, the not knowing what happened to Lucy.

I hope 2012 will bring Lucy back to us where she belongs.

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

Previously missed this post.
  • It's viewed as the state interfering with personal choice.
  • There have been a few instances where microchips are suspected of causing cancer.
  • Microchips may not be 100% reliable with some occasionally moving or they simply stop working. (Thread - Losing a microchipl)
  • It costs owners money.

As far as I know it is compulsory in some European countries. Travel to Germany and I believe France is only allowed for instance if your dog is chipped. Tattoos used to be accepted but are now not sufficient.

My own personal view is the positives outwiegh the negatives.

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

i agree in my opinion all dogs should be microchipped - i believe it would help with stopping animal neglect and obviously reuniting people with their pets alot of places do free microchipping now but some people have reasons for not wanting their dogs to have it done i believe others are unaware of it?

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

I imagine that only responsible owners would comply anyway. Dog licensing is compulsory here but I see very few licenses on collars.

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

It's not compulsory because we live in a free country and it's up to the individual whether or not to chip their dog. I have three dogs. One is chipped and the other two aren't.

I agree that all vets should routinely scan all clients and if a dog is micro chipped to someone else they should notify the microchip company of it's whereabouts should it be proven to be stolen.

Sorry about your daughter's lurcher

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

my dogs walk off the lead all the time so were both microchipped as soon as they could, to me it was as necessary as their injections. it's people who have unchipped cats that confuse me...they're out all the time, i wouldn't risk it

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

In Ireland microchipping is a requisite for IKC registration, it's also a requirement for a pet passport. It would be beneficial if the same were done here by the KC.

As others have said, there have been some negative health implications linked to microchips and for that reason I think it should be down to the individual owner to decide whether or not to chip their pet.

I'm 100% with you on the chips being checked more frequently though, my vets never scan the chips routinely, I always have to request it so stolen or lost pets could easily slip through the net if someone took them in.

Hope Lucy comes home this year x

Re: Why is Microchipping not compulsory?

It's not compulsory because it is difficult to enforce, and also, there are side effects to microchipping.

One of my three dogs are microchipped. I'm all for microchipping, however I feel some form of ID should be compulsory, not just microchipping.
