Going away for a break with your dog

Hi
How many of you take your dogs with you when you go away for a few days in the UK and what is your opinion on the choice and quality of dog friendly accommodation?

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

I have been away three times with Kilo - once didn't count from this thread point of view as we went to Mum and Dad's, the other twice the accommodation was excellent in terms of the houses but each time the gardens were a total let down.

The first house specified a secure garden which is one of the main reasons why I chose it. It had a fence with huge gaps between the railings on one side and at the front the fence was only about 1m tall on top of a very low (2 rows of bricks tall) wall with a 6ft drop the other side. Not only that, but there was loads of debris such as glass, wood with nails in, pottery etc from building work (I assume). Kilo had to be kept on a tie - out stake when I wanted to sit out there and also gashed his toe open which required a vet visit. I detailed the problems on the review that the website ask you to write; but funnily enough it wasn't published as tends to happen with these things.

The second house had a picture of a garden on the website with a tall wall. However, when we got there the back garden was shared with a neighbour, one side had direct access (unfenced) to the road and there was a tiny low fence separating it form the other neighbour's garden.....the neighbour's garden had the tall wall from the photo on the other side. So the photo from the website was actually not of the garden belonging to the property. I found this property less of a problem as it was November so dark when we returned to the property after being out all day and I wouldn't have wanted to sit out there.

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

I always take the dogs where ever but have only ever found one truly dog friendly place to stay.

I've stopped going away now, much more comfy at home

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

When I've taken the dogs it only been to somewhere like a haven holiday mobile home park so can't really comment. But the dogs have loved the holiday mobile home park as we got one right next to a beach. The quality didn't change much we just had darker shades of carpet and the furniture was more worn. (sofa's and things) a lovely holiday but I've never taken them abroad and haven been anywhere else in the uk with them apart from various mobile home parks.

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

we searched long and hard to find somewhere dog friendly to get married-it is relevent cause we were looking a b&bs that did weddings and country houses/hotels type things- and the amount who when questioned a little more said the dog had to stay in the kitchen or basement was horrific. i'm sorry but keeping my dogs locked in a basement is not dog friendly accommodation as far as i'm concerned!

in the end we found this place....
Tournerbury Woods Cottage, Tournerbury, Hayling Island, Hampshire
it's not exactly the most secure place in the world as it's set in 50 acres but it's working out an absolute treat! they have said they ask not to let the dogs in the bedrooms but followed it by 'but there's not exactly a lot we can do about it if they do' so we are going to bring our own sheets and vacuum and have a really good tidy up before we leave. i'm sooooooo excited!!!!!

my OH and i have talked about opening up a dog friendly b&b when we are old and have had kids who have left home, so give us 30 years and start this thread again

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

My friends run 2 fantastic dog friendly cottages on their farm near Barnard Castle (County Durham)

News - Laverock Holiday Cottages

and also near Barnard Castle other friends run a great holiday let...

Leighton Cottage - Bowes - Self Catering Accommodation

and in the SW there's Bowerlands Holiday Cottages

Multiple Dogs welcome, dogs free, Self catering country cottage, Okehampton, Dartmoor, Devon

all high quality, dog friendly holiday places :-) I haven't been to Bowerlands but they featured on Location Location Location and apparently the cottages are fantastic - the other two I do know they're fantastic too!

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

I go away with my dog all the time and there are LOADS of really good dog friendly places to stay; I tend to stay on farms where there is ample room to exercise your dogs; some are BEAUTIFUL and better than hotels.

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

I've only taken my dogs on holiday with me once and that was back in September. I found that particular cottage to be very dog friendly, even supplying poo bags, drinking bowl etc and the folk in North Wales seemed to all walk round with treats in their pockets (even those who didnt have a dog with them) ready to feed them to random dogs!

I'm in the process of looking again but find that stuff within my budget that caters for 3 dogs is few and far between. I dont want accommodation on a farm because I would worry about the livestock (chickens in particular) and I dont want accommodation within the grounds of the owners home as I would feel I was being watched all the time.

There is stuff out there though if you look hard enough.

Re: Going away for a break with your dog

I have never taken molly away, but thats mainly because I have only had her two months and a half months :P But if I ever do go away for a holiday in the UK, they she would deffo be coming with us but I don't think I would opt for a b&b or hotel, I think I would stay in a caravan that allowed dogs
