Unhappy puppy pandemonium

HI, We have 2 patterdale terriers, our male Milo,4 years old is such a good boy so we thought it was time to introduce a friend and decided to go for the same breed again as he is so good. So we got Millie now 7 months (had her since 7 weeks) and are discovering a few frustrating problems which we understand are all part and parcel of having a puppy. Millie hasnt quite got the just of house training.....we have a dog area in our garden where the dogs go for doing their business, Millie will not wait or ask (body language etc) to go to the area she will just do it in the house, i let them out at regular intervals during the day but she still seems to forget what shes been put out to do and does it in the house. She still messes in the house at night and has started to urinate on things as if shes being spiteful for example 3 times on my bed ! and once on a chair in our childrens playroom. She has started to chase cars through the bay window and bark uncontrollably :/ i firmly tell her NO ! and manage to get her to leave the room, its rather annoying and makes me embarrassed lol and when we take her for walks she makes this rather strange yapping howl when we meet other dogs which makes her come across very antisocial again i tell her no and we carry on. Are all these things "normal" behaviour for a pup ? we never had it this bad with Milo

thankyou and sorry to ramble on

Re: puppy pandemonium

7 months is still a baby really.

Please dont be offended but have you put in as much effort with her training as you did with Milo? It sounds to me as you may have fallen into the comparing her to Milo trap?? ie as he is an adult with good training he can hold himself overnight whereas she might need to go out a bit later or earlier in the morning than him, but as he does it you now assume she should?

All dogs are different even if they are the same breed.

Re: puppy pandemonium

With the housetraining all you can do is let them out at regular intervals and make a big big fuss with treats and praise if the pup gets it right. If you catch them going in the house, interrupt them and make them finish outside. If they do, treat them for it.

Ignore all accidents and make sure you're removing the urine smell. Try mixing bio washing powder with water to clean up the accidents, or get a special spray from the petshop.

Finally, dogs don't spitefully wee! Housetraining is frustrating and it takes some dogs longer than others. But if you put a consistent routine with rewards then you're on the right track.

As for the growling - perhaps taking them for a walk alone and try to meet lots of dogs, and treat him whenever you see a dog approach and also if he manages to greet them nicely. I wonder if he's growling as he doesn't want anyone to go near your other dog?

Re: puppy pandemonium

thanks for both your comments, everything you both suggested im doing she just hasn't grasped it. I let her out 1st thing in the morning 6am sharp go with her say "do a wee wee/poop" and when she does i make a fuss and when she comes back i give her a biscuit she just doesn't get it and still manages to do it in the house its like ...grr why ? you've just been out! its just frustrating cause i feel im doing all the right things but she isnt catching on perhaps i do compare them but i do understand shes only a baby aswel. As for the walk ive also tried taking them on their own, together, with just my partner or just me, kids with us, no kids with us she still does it ...perhaps she just cant contain her excitment ! i will stick with it fingers crossed things can only get better

Re: puppy pandemonium

I would clean any areas she has 'been' indoors with a solution of biological washing powder to get rid of any risidual smells.
If she goes indoors, ignore her and clean up quietly.
Take her outside every hour PLUS every time she wakes up, stops playing, has a drink, finishes eating or shows any signs she needs to go.
Wait outside until she goes - do yo use a crate or have an area you can contain her - if she doesn't go I'd bring her in and place her in her crate wait just 1 minute take her back out, repeat until she goes. She'll soon learn that nothing fun happens until she does. When she does get it right - priase, treat and have FUN.

As for walking try teaching her the watch me comand - when it's 100% solid in a zero distraction enviroment ie indoors move to the garden and get it 100% there then move to the front door step and get it 100% right there, then try it when a dog is in the distance and gradually build it up.

Best of luck - it may be worth getting some more 'live' support and contacting a local rewards based trainer/training class.

Re: puppy pandemonium

Only say your "do wee wee" command as she is toileting. Say it over and over till the wee runs out, then when you're sure she's done praise and treat her.

It is very frustrating when they toilet inside, especially if you've just been outside! But stick with it. Interrupt if you witness it, clean it up properly if you don't.

The more success they have outside the more they'll catch on - so don't let her out of your sight so you can catch her every time she needs to go.
