going to agility classes after contact with kc

Would you go to agility classes if your dogs had been in contact with a coughing dog, even though your dogs appeared to be fine - less than a week later.

Re: going to agility classes after contact with kc

No. My dogs are innoculated against KC but I still wouldn't take the risk of the particular strain being one they weren't vaccinated against. I'd leave it a couple of weeks until I was sure they weren't affected/infected.
The rules for agility competitions state that you can't compete if your dog has been exposed to any infectious disease within the last 2 weeks. The same should apply to training classes, out of basic courtesy and consideration for the classmates and their dogs.

I am not a vet, but I believe that dogs that have kennel cough can be contagious for weeks after. Your dogs would show signs of a cough after 2-7 days
If it was me, and my dogs were ok after a week, I would carry on as normal, otherwise you may sit their for weeks waiting for your dogs to get kennel cough and they may never get it.

Re: going to agility classes after contact with kc

I wouldn't go. Symptoms might not show until 10 days later.

I have just had email from our agility group

Quote:
I have been told that kennel cough is very prevalent at present. It is particulalry bad in the north east of England. People from this area will be at the Hare n Hounds show which was last weekend and many will be going to Woodside. There are no symptoms for around the first 10 days but the dogs are still infectious so there is the greatest chance of transmission from recent contacts. Please get your dogs vaccinated immediately if you have not done so in the last year. Vaccination really needs 7 days to be effective but now is better than nothing! Vaccination does not prevent the viral part of the disease but it will prevent the bacterial infection so reducing the seriousness and duration of the disease and also the likelihood of infection.

Do not share water bowls at any event including training as this is a very common way of transmitting the disease. If your dog coughs or has a runny nose or is generally under the weather, please do not bring him to training. If symptoms worsen, then contact your vet but do not take your dog into the surgery until you have had an opportunity to gain advice.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it happens most years and is especially bad this year apparently. If you hear of any cases round here, please let me know.

I am glad everyone is in agreement. I will not go into how they came in contact - suffice to say I have not recovered my temper over it yet.

Let me guess.... someone ignoring the 'keep your dog away from other dogs' advice from the vet?

Blitz I would be livid - the selfishness of some folk amazes me; they would often be the first to complain if the shoe was on the other foot so to speak.

Fingers crossed that your dogs are unaffected, you have enough to worry about right now!
