A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

Opinions please.

Should all establishments including pet shops, breeders and rescue centres, close their doors to buyers over the Christmas period.

We reserved our two cats just before Christmas last year, but were late undergoing our home check. Hence we could not collect Melody and Edna until late January.

I completely agree with the slogan 'Dogs are for life, not just for Christmas', so does everyone agree? Or does it make absolutely no difference what time of the year a pet is brought! Surely if people want to throw Fido or Kitty out with the decorations, then does it really doesn't matter

millrescue doesnt home at xmas times either. one of the reasons being is that xmas festivities are pretty hectic in some homes and dogs need to settle in their new homes and may find all the comings and goings to much

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

i got my 2 cats for xmas from oh

But i do agree that its a dangerous time selling pets as alot of parents get their spoilt kids a puppy to keep busy with and then kiddies are not doing their duties and the parents get rid of the pet.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

This cold time of year worries me when people go into places like Pets At Home and buy these little tiny guinea pigs who have had a couple of weeks in the nice draft free environment into to a hutch in someones garden.
I think from November to middle of January no animal should be sold.
Chances pups are due to leave from next week onwards and I am worried that they get good homes, 5* ones like they deserve but with christmas just around the corner I am worried they will be bought as gifts and when people are illeducated they take them on without knowing how stubborn the breed is and what money it could cost you in facial surgery(fingers crossed all Chances pups are fine).

yeh dogs are for life and ppl who just want to toss them out with the decorations shouldn't be allowed the pet in the first place.

we get our Akita puppy at the end of November and he will defo be for life, can wait we are sooo excited, although the x'mas tree will be fun i am sure lol

Our local evening paper doesn't accept pet adverts over the Christmas period, I think that's a good idea too.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

I suppose it depends, on the one hand it would be a shame if someone who genuinely wanted a pup, and was genuinely going to keep it for life, couldn't get a pup for themselves or a loved one at christmas.

But on the other hand, if they genuinely did want one, shouldn't they be happy to wait that little bit longer.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

I totally agree that a dog is for life. (or pretty much any pet that forms attachments, to be honest). I also think breeders should be more careful about homing around Christmas. I don't think they shouldn't breed then though, if there are good reasons for doing so.

For some people, Christmas is a good time to get apuppy, as the whole family will be at home to help it settle in. I also think if the puppy is well raised by the breeder, the comings and goings of Christmas shouldn't affect it adversely.

We got Indi just before Christmas. It did mean re-arranging our plans slightly, but that was fine with us. i think all the visitors did her good, she is super-outgoing!

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

My pups wont be going until the second week in Jan, but all bar the one pup have been booked for the past 18 months - 2 years I do have a name interested in the last boy, however because I dont know them and dont know anybody that does he will not be going there. At this time of year i wont sell unless people come recommended
