Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

I have to be honest here and say that I do agree, Christmas is not the ideal time to have a new puppy or kitten, BUT, I so wanted to bring Edna and Melody home last year for Christmas. I just could not bear the thought of them being in that cold pod for a moment longer.

However, to them it was just another ordinary day!!!!

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

i think it would be better not to sell to people over the christmas period..lets face it, if you want a pet that bad you would'nt mind waiting a bit longer.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

Apart from genuine emergencies, we neither take in nor rehome rescues from the middle of December to the middle of January. There are two reasons for this. Firstly our hardworking volunteers need a break as the work never ends. In the past two days for example, we have had 48 calls at home from people wishing to give up their dogs - and we are just one of a number of regional co-ordinators.
Secondly, we want to minimise the possibility of people either giving up or taking on a dog on a Christmas whim.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

A few years ago I went to London xmas shopping, I was so excited when we went into Harrods and made straight for the pet department......it was completely empty of animals, and instead it had an RSPCA display and you could donate etc through the person on the stand.

Good idea I thought.

Excellent idea. From the welfare prospective, kittens and puppies love tinsel and baubles, so all extra temptations. Not to mention the threat of poinsettia plants. All in all, I would agree that pets should not be sold at Xmas.

Re: A dog is for Life not just for Xmas!

It is a tricky one! I don't think any animal should be given as a surprise present, If you have been looking for a breeder and their pups happen to be born near Christmas I suppose you might call it a treat for Christmas. I would be very wary if I was a breeder I certainly would never sell to anyone who wanted to buy a puppy for a present any time of year. That is a good idea to put donation boxes at Christmas time it might make people think twice.

I looked after a friend's dog over Christmas one year while they were away. Kira absolutely adored him and having him around, so I had to keep telling her that Jack wasn't for life, Jack was just for Christmas....

Pets are for life, and not a one time or one month, and so on,when we get them its a for ever thing, you can not dump your kids out and do them what people do to pets, thay need to stop and think befor thay buy.
