Dew claws?

I was interested to know how people felt about dew claws, or fore claws as some refer to them.

Do you think they should be removed or left alone?

Do you think this should be done by a vet at 1 to 2 days old or could an experienced breeder do it?

Do you think firmly attached ones should be left but the losse kind be removed?

any thoughts welcome

my border collie still has dew claws on his back legs as the breeder didnt believe in having them removed, he suffers no problems with them at the moment, however if he did I would have them removed.

Re: Dew claws?

I think if they are causing the dog pain they should be removed.
I think if they are show dogs and will be penalised for having them they should be removed.
I think only vets should be allowed to remove them or it will open the floodgates for irresponsible owners doing it incorrectly.
Thats what I think.

Re: Dew claws?

I feel if they don't cause a hassle leave them alone, I've never had a problem with my dogs, but I know people that have, including double front dew claws. Some dogs can catch them when jumping, I now a lot of flyball dogs wear protecters to prevent injury.

I agree with you but reading up on the subject it has become apparent that a lot of breeders do actualy do it themselfs as more vets are becoming reluctant to do it
