Re: Jumping up
I can relate to that, our boys are 2 now and still have a tendency to run too other dogs or people. This normally happens in a open space and when the dogs see the distraction in the distance. If they are ahead scouting around it is very difficult to distract their attention back to us and we often loose control at that point and my days of playing rugby come in handy! Sprinting after them.
So to try and avoid this we use the heal command. If walking on a path and we have a good view in front and do not see any people or dogs ahead they can allowed to roam, but if we come to a corner or some obstruction we recall them and use the heal command. They love coming to heal for some reason which is great and understand that they are not allowed to leave us at that point and until we say "go". If we see people in the distance we recall them and they can stay off the lead but on heal until we meet the people then after the meeting can roam again. If it is people with a dog then they go back on the lead and until the meet, if the other dogs are ok and the owners want them to play we will let them off, I just think the lure of another dog in the distance is just too much for our rotties, most dogs really. Sometimes they get too far ahead roaming and the recall does fail. So now we try and get their attention regularly when they roam so that they dont go too far ahead or get too focussed on roaming and loose their connection to us. Hope that helps. |

Re: Jumping up
I agree with the other response, keep an eye out in front and keep them close to you - with Rocky I am still using a lot of a treats when he comes back to me but he always comes back when I call even when running up to people and dogs. I also use the sit command until other people pass, I get him to come to me well before he gets to the other people/dogs and make him sit with a treat right in front of him and keep his attention with that til the other people pass.

Re: Jumping up
that usually works - and until today I've never had a dog owner who hasnt empathised.
But today on the beach (muddy as usual) he was occupied with the ball. And so concentrating on that - I keep his focus keeping him still focused on the ball until other dogs and owners go past - today however he still went running straight to this man and dog - not to far away - the man shouted at his own dog then at mine - then at me ![]() ![]() i did apologise and tried to explain but all he shouted was cant you control your dog - I said he was still learning he's just a pup - he shouted what is he 2 ? I said no 6 months and he walked off shoting "gahh youll never teach him" Id rather have a dog like mine who is loving and is loved, cared for and is affectionate and has affection than an overly trained dog who doesnt appear to have anything in the way of affection from such a horrible man!!! |

Re: Jumping up
what an idiot i would have felt like punching him for shouting at my dog!
Our Dixie was bad for jumping at people. Even trying to distract her failed sometimes.. I dont know maybe some people must have 'jump on me' written all over them cos most people she would just walk past, there were just those few people she couldnt help saying hello to. I started using a longline or a clothes line when walking near people so when she looked as if she was about to divebomb some unsuspecting person I would tell her to leave and then if she still looked really interested in the person i would ask her to heel. Of course the terrier part of her wanted to do the exact opposite so id reel her back in and repeat the command. She soon learned what i wanted was not always to come to my side if there was another person but just not to run up to them. after a while she got it so well i took the longline off but if she did run up to someone uninvited she would be told no and heel and kept on a short lead for a while. it worked with dogs too and now she will walk off lead in quieter areas, right past other dogs. and when she gets to the park she sits and looks at me until the all important 'ok' then she turns into a maddie and carreers into other dogs to get them to play! even then, 99% of teh time if i shout she will come straight back ![]()
