Re: On Lead and off lead walks

Good Idea!! Glasgow may have it's problems but I have met some of the nicest dog owners on my walks than anywhere i've lived so maybe the one thing going for Glasgow is that we're all good to our dogs even if we're not that nice to each other!

Everyone is entitled to use public spaces: families, walkers, runners, people with on lead dogs. And they are all entitled to expect not to be bothered by off lead dogs. Funnily enough, the only people who are ever restricted from access are....those with off-lead dogs! Well-adjusted dogs in my book aren't charging up to everything in sight and making a pest of themselves with dogs that really don't want to know.
I don't know if you've ever tried finding somewhere to walk where you won't find other dogs. I have. It doesn't exist.

Re: On Lead and off lead walks

Not meaning to be rude or offensive, but I can honestly never understand why people allow their offead dog to go up to a strange onlead dog. Unless the owner and offlead dog personally know the onlead dog, I don't see how any person can see it as an alright thing to do..

Perhaps everyone needs the experience of having to keep a dog onlead for whatever reason (ill/behaviour etc) to actually experience what its like. Pretty sure those people who don't have a problem with it, would soon change their minds.

Re: On Lead and off lead walks

i love when i can let my dog off her lead and so does she!
i like you never let her off near roads or anywhere thats too busy
but as i live in the country theres a bit right next to me i can walk her for 15 mins off lead before she needs to be back on, ive not really came across any other dogs with her yet apart from at the park once a little dog came running over but she just stayed by my side and they had a little sniff and then the other dog ran back to his owner and we went on our way.

i think its good for dogs to meet each other in parks, so long as the owners know their dogs and are responsible. i think this woman is probably just over protective and sadly for her dog this means it doesnt really understand that its ok for dogs to sniff it and it should sniff back.

I'm not sure why people assume so often that it is a socialisation or over protective owner scenario. The lady may have had good reason to be protective - the dog could have been old, arthritic, ill, DA, afraid or any number of other reasons.

I wholeheartedly agree that socialisation is a good thing, but if someone doesn't want their dogs to mix with others, for whatever reason, we need to respect that. As moonviolet has said in a few of her posts, a dog charging up to hers undoes a huge amount of work and I also don't think it does any harm for other dogs to learn that they can't greet every dog they see.

.
..like maybe it just wasnt interested in other dogs despite how well socialized and stable it might have been! Not all dogs have read the 'big book of how dogs should behave' and so much like people have different tolerances for others of their species.
I have one that is happy to go sniff and be sniffed back and two that see no need to go sniffing a strange dogs bottom! they are happy in each others company.
