Exclamation Problems with my beagle puppy..

About a month ago I bought a beagle/blue tick puppy. Shes now about 2 1/2 months old. And before I get a bunch of replies saying this, I know shes still really young and that may be all there is to it. But...she's driving me insane. I've had puppies before and I don't remember them being like this. I've been attempting to crate train her and she isn't learning. I'll take her outside for up to 20-30 minutes and all she does is play. Then the minute she gets inside she poops. I've bough the potty pads and all she does is tear them up. I guess, if nothing else, I just need to be reassured that this is normal because on top of the potty issue, she eats through every cord i have in the house. She rips up money, paper, and anything else she gets a hold of. Like I've said, I've had puppies before and I don't remember it being this hard. I pop her, I've put her nose in it. I've done just about everything that other people have suggested and she just keeps doing it. Someone please help me....

Re: Problems with my beagle puppy..

Sounds like you should re home her for her sake.

Don't know what you mean by "pop" her but if you mean smack her then you are obviously not cut out to raise a pup.

Unless your girl is some kind of genius at opening your purse, cupboards, wardrobes etc. or a budding electrician I can't see how she manages to get hold of the things you say she gets. It's your responsibility to keep things she mustn't get out of harms way, she doesn't know it's wrong as she just an adventurous pup. You are the human here and you need to think about how best to protect and teach her. By "popping" her and "putting her nose in it" you are showing just how inexperienced you are in raising a pup and maybe you should have researched how it's done before buying one. A Beagle is a pretty high energy dog anyway but then I don't suppose you researched that either!

Re: Problems with my beagle puppy..

Sounds like an absolutely normal puppy to me.

If you want to go ahead with this, you will have to accept that anything left in puppy's reach belongs to pup. If you treasure it REMOVE IT. You cannot expect a pup to do anything but chew, shred and destroy whatever it reaches. They do grow out of it but not for 18 months - 2 years.

Power cords are a lousy training tool. 240 or whatever volts through a puppy gives a consistently - and predictably - poor result.

Effective toilet training means eternal vigilence and explaining what you want, in a way that they understand. Pups generally go when they wake up, after they eat and part way into energetic play. Take them to where they are to go at those times and anytime you catch a squat. Await results; use a particular word if you want them to go on command later. When they go be lavish and enthusiastic with praise; make it clear that you are really overjoyed.

Be patient. A child of that age is seriously unreliable in the potty department, too. Never, EVER punish mistakes. They just get frightened and confused, they don't learn when they're frightened; NO ONE DOES. ALWAYS praise good results.

Good luck.

Put her nose in it? Do you really believe dogs understand this? Dear God.

Oh my goodness you have actually rubbed your pups little nose in its own feaces simply because she isnt house trainned yet? Can you actually imagine how that would feel? I'm horrified.

I hate to think what 'popping' is

Re: Problems with my beagle puppy..

are you serious? you have only had her a couple weeks, give her a chance. she is a baby, have you had kids? cos they take 3 years to be toilet trained
if she is destroying things replace it with her toys and play with her instead, sound like a normal puppy to me.

Re: Problems with my beagle puppy..

It all sounds completely normal puppy behaviour and beagles being so active do a lot of it!

Limit her access to any area you have not puppy proofed (baby stair gates are handy for this) and when puppy proofing get on your hands and knees take a puppy eye view. Get hold of a puppy pen for times she can play but you can't watch 100%. At that age Tink was popped into her puppy pen even if i needed to go to the toilet.

Solo beagles can be a little slow to housetrain it's simply about being vigiliant. when she comes into the house what does she do the moment before she poops? does she sniff or circle? if she does distract her immediatly and try to lure her outside.

I genuinely believe that beagles historically were considered untrainable because they don't respond well to punitive training. Reward based training is with a beagle definitely the way and has she had her vaccinations, how is her socialisation with the world as a whole going? The more interaction and trust you can build up the better.

There are sticky threads on house training and crate training which would be well worth a read as they are full of very good advice.

Bloomin eck, shes a puppy and a beagle to boot. Give her a break. She will only tear things up if they are in her reach, try keeping things away from her, one problem solved. Doh!.

Re: Problems with my beagle puppy..

When you take her out to toilet put her on a lead so she can't run riot around the garden playing.
