I would always leave it until they had finished growing and matured a bit physically and mentally. Especially if a large breed. There is Data and research
that dogs tend to grow taller when neutered very young, this is because the sex hormones naturally shut off the growth hormones when the time is right.
With really early neuters, the sex hormones of course are taken away too early or dont develope so the growth hormones dont get shut off when they should which causes the excess growth. This can apparrently cause joint problems and ligament problems such as cruciate. A lot of behaviourists believe too that it locks a puppy into puppy mentality for a lot longer. There is also another school of thought too that if the dog is a nervous or timid type
the hormones and maturity that give confidence of course wont happen so
could make the problem worse.

Re: Unsolicited advice

Today I had 'clicker training doesn't work, I wouldn't bother if I were you'. from a guy with a pointer who was, well, not particularly well behaved shall we say...

I often get, 'a harness would be better for her' about Florence, even though she rarely pulls

Haha and I've just remembered a guy who told me, when I told him that Florence didn't really chew the house apart as a puppy, that she would go through a chewing phase as an adult... I'm still waiting though

Ive often heard people say about a young boisterous pup/dog we are getting him done it will calm him down. It doesnt really, it can help with dogs that are shall we say fraustrated Likely to escape and roam if there is a bitch in season, and can be agressive and try to fight with other males (Providing its that and not fear based aggresion) basically anything behaviourwise that can be testosterone fueled. Thats really about it though. It can protect against things like certain cancers and things like anal adenomas.

Re: Unsolicited advice

I'm quite lucky actually I very rarely get people giving me advice.
I do get a lot of people stopping to talk to me about him (especially if he has his harness and panniers on).
I'm 25 but look younger and haven't really had issues with people thinking I can't train him.

Re: Unsolicited advice

I did have a guy stop to talk to me about Kas the other day, she was playing with his Jack Russel ever so nicely and then he announced that he "wouldn't allow" his wife to have a dog like Kas because she was too big! I said I was lucky enough not to need a mans permission to own my dog

Re: Unsolicited advice

Once a woman looked at Oscar and said he was a nice dog but did I realise his legs were a bit short?

Then she asked what type of dog he was anyway..He is a BC ..

I looked at her straight faced and said he was a very rare giant harlequin chihuahua..

She blinked looked all interested and said ' really'?
I just walked off, my friend nearly wet herself laughing and the women is proberbly still none the wiser!

Re: Unsolicited advice

rare chihuahua lmao!! some people - i get asked a lot what grizz is which i can understand i suppose as before having him i dont know that i would recognise a clipped oes.

I seem to get the opposite advice about neutering - people always say its suh a shame that hes done and i shouldnt have because he would make a good stud dog, and the same with his coat - i get its cruel and that he isnt meant to look like that - says who?? i dont tell you how to style your kids hair do i?
my reply is always the same he is my pet and not a show dog, as long as he's happy and healthy thats all that matters.

Re: Unsolicited advice

and why is it that its usually people with badly behaved or unhealthy looking dogs who feel the need to share their 'experience'??
I often get people warning me to avoid certain dogs (usually the very evil and viscious Staffs!!) coz they will eat/attack my lot. I do listen if they say the dog in question is known to have attacked other dogs but generally its just scare mongering and prejudice.
One guy warned me that a very nasty Staff had just attacked his JRT and I should avoid it. This was after his JRT had run straight up to mine, attempted to mount Adam, snapped at Hannah and chased after Heidi scaring her half to death!! Needless to say when we met the 'DA' Staffie he was a gent and had no problems saying hello to me and my friendly, submissive gang!!
