Half inside/outside dogs to fully outdoor dogs

Hello,

I have alsked advice here on house training a dog and am having no luck. I have tried the newspaper in the corner thing, taking the dog outside and praising it when it goes and many other methods. Our dogs come inside at night and go outside in the day. Our first dog is fully toilet trained and likes going outside. I just cannot seem to train our new Beagle. Every night without fail it poos and wees all over the loungeroom. It is starting to stink of dog urine despite my efforts with disinfectant and a mop bucket. I have decided to make both our dogs outdoor only dogs. Our existing dog has no problems with this as sometimes she is outside all night somedays and she doesn't mind - as long as she gets fed and gets her cuddles and 1 or 2 walks a day which we now consistantly provide and occasional trip to the great dog park we have in our suburb for socialisation. I was thinking of making a playhouse sized house outside with heating in winter for the dogs outside. Has anyone done anything like this? At the moment they sleep under the porch on a couch. Any advice for a large heated dog house with windows?

If they are outside all day, how much time do you actualy spend with them. Do you only do the toilet training stuff in the evenings when you are with the dogs. If that's the case then a free for all pee and poo all day isn't teaching anything.

Did you do any reading up on beagles? They can take longer than other breeds to become clean in the house and i agree with Jayne5364 letting a pup outside all day isn't going teach them that there "is a time and place"

Re: Half inside/outside dogs to fully outdoor dogs

I have been with the dog and put her outside calmly and said "NO" when she has defecated inside. I have then praised her when she has deficated outside. I have tried newspaper in the corner in case she needed to go but I just can't seem to get the message across.

I met a lady at the local dog park on Sunday who seemed like a dog expert and when I said the words "train" and "beagle" in the same sentance she started laughing and told me that you can't really train Beagles!! The Beagle is so gorgeous and I love to cuddle her even though she ruins my wifes livingroom floor every day. And everything including the couches smell like wet pungent dog wee. (not even the cats wee smells that bad!).

My boss who is a Beagle expert - he has lived with 3 generations of Beagles and now has 4 Beagles. He told me the only way to train a Beagle to not poo inside is to rub it's nose in it and throw it outside. I told him that people on this forum said not to do that and he said it is the only way - you won't hurt it's feelings and it may be scared of pooing inside but that is the desired result it does not poo inside anymore. I still can't bring myself to do that the dog is too cute and I can't get angry at it. I often can't catch it doing it in time too but my boss said it doesn't matter if you don't catch it doing it - rub its nose in it in the morning and throw it out - Beagles are smart and will eventually get the message.

He has all his Beagles outside 24hrs a day all summer and inside at night only in winter. I am thinking I might just do that for the cleanliness of the living room.

Or I suppose I could build the heated dog house outside

Re: Half inside/outside dogs to fully outdoor dogs

Your boss is an ass, and just because he has beagles doesn't make him a beagle expert, especially if his dogs are just dumped outside all day and have their noses rubbed in faeces (sp?) If a dog messes in the house it is not the dogs fault, it is the owners because they have either not put the training in or have missed the signs and not let the dog out. I agree with what had been said, leaving a dog outside all day isn't training any sort of toilet manners, they will just think that as they get no reaction good or bad when they do it outside that there is no difference. You need to start from scratch imo have the dog in the home (why wouldnt you anyway?) And let her out every hour or so, and as soon as she 'goes' lots of stupid high pitched 'good girl/boy' and fuss. You could give it a cue word like I have with kiva? As soon as she has finished her business say 'wee wee's' good girl! And fuss/treat if you repeat this EVERYTIME she toilets outside you will eventually be able to get her to wee on command like my 14 week old GSD

There's really not many on here who house their dogs outside- I think there might be a few working dogs that are, but I can't fully recall.

Patience and consistancy are the two things you need for training, and a really good disinfectant- try looking for enzyme-specific cleaners?

I am incandescent with rage at this.... so i will not reply directly I will only say

i have a beagle, she attends an advanced obedience class, a tricks class, she walks to heel off lead. she is clean in the house and have never 'rubbed her nose in it.' I'm stopping now before i say what i think without censorship.

Re: Half inside/outside dogs to fully outdoor dogs

with toilet training, ive always done the same thing....newspaper in the living room, theres a scent spray you can get......put that on the paper....everytime you see the dog about to go...put it on the paper.....then move the paper to the back door.....when it goes to the paper...put the dog outside....doesnt take long at all.....dogs dont like messing indoors,so its easy!

Re: Half inside/outside dogs to fully outdoor dogs

You might keep the pup outside for the sake of your livingroom? Sounds more like, You just can't be bothered to put the effort into training the pup to me. its not going to happen overnight and different dogs just like children take to toilet training easier than others you just have to keep working on it. One of my dogs took 6 months to toilet train fully, Was an absolute nightmare but we got there in the end, My others all caught on in a few days of having them. Every dog is different.
