Re: keeping dog off furniture

Firstly - shouting at them will do nothing but stress everyone out.

You've established a rule that they can relax on the sofa, and now you've changed your mind. Thats not their fault. Shout at yourself, not them!

Then decide how to tackle it, calmly, and stick to it. It's going to take a long long time so in the meantime you might want to protect your sofa with covers. And buy in lots of training treats.

If they get on the sofa as a bed - you need to get them a nice comfy bed to sleep in instead, and reward them for doing so. Make it all positive and interesting.

If they get on the sofa as thats where you give them cuddles and affection, then get on the floor and make being on the floor very interesting. When they come to join you treat them and fuss them. Make the floor the place they get all their affection now.

Good Luck

Re: keeping dog off furniture

I do know what you mean though - I have a dark brown leather sofa and I have to vacuum it and wash it every couple of days to keep it looking good.

I've let Charlie on the sofa, overall he's no trouble. I'd love a nice clean sofa, but I've made my bed and Charlie will lie in it with me

Just reread your post - and I'd like you to consider how confusing it is for the dog to be allowed on the sofa for a cuddle, but not at any other time.

You need to set a rule: they're either allowed on or not. No halfway house.

If you've decided they're not allowed on, then you have to stop the sofa cuddles.

Re: keeping dog off furniture

I am really surprised at some of the response here

In my house my old girl is allowed up but as a youngster learned she had to be invited ie not just jumping up as she pleased but waiting for 'ok' meaning get up Not every person we visit want dogs on their furniture

My new boy has clearly been allowed on furniture - he has launched himself on every sofa he has seen first time round However he has not earned the priviledge at home as its MY SOFA not his

Admittedly it only took a couple of days of being consistent for him to know he is not permitted He has been allowed up for a cuddle a few times but as soon as I tell him 'off' he is to get off and does so

OP I assume your dogs have their own beds so train them to use them Without shouting at them and pushing them, use the 'off' command (or whatever you use) and praise them for getting off. Also train them to go to their bed - like a send away. Make it fun and lots of treats and praise, then for future when you get on the sofa send them to their beds so they have a command to follow rather than clambering on furniture

Alternatively invest in some decent throws

I think you really should have started as you meant to go on! i think you have set your self up for a lot of stress, not to mention your pooches! unless you re-train in a very positive and stress free way! Just buy some throws there easily cleaned IMO! dog's are part of the family not part of the floor even if that means a shared sofa or one of there own! good luck.

Re: keeping dog off furniture

We are getting a new leather sofa nxt yr , we have fabric ones at moment and lola is allowed on them and also will be allowed on the new ones Oh got a new leather arm chair on monday and she is allowed on there

I know its each to there own about letting them on furniture

Only suggestion i could recommend is what others have said use either throws or a blanket to cover them coz i think after 3 yrs of them being allowed on sofas trying to keep them off is going to be difficcult
