Puppy nipping

We have a 8 week old miniature schnauzer, who is very nippy.. Obviously this is puppy behavior but we were wondering what is the best way to deal with it. We have tried saying "ouch" in a really high pitched voice, but this does not seem to be working...She has plenty of chewy toys which she loves.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Re: Puppy nipping

Try replacing your hand with a toy

If that dosnt work try time out

We tried everything with lola and time out was the only thing that worked

Re: Puppy nipping

I found saying NO! in a firm, deep voice then turning away and ignoring helps. Oscar used to get totally bewildered by it at first but soon learnt that if he bit too hard the games would stop.

Re: Puppy nipping

I am having the same problem but nothing is working for me!

I have tried yelping but that gets her more excited

Giving her a toy instead distracts her for a couple of seconds but then it's back to nipping again.

Saying No makes her pause for a couple of seconds then it's back to nipping

Putting her in time out makes her calm down but as soon as I let her out she goes back to nipping.

I'm hoping she grows out of it soon lol.

Our pup Ozzy was the same a couple of weeks ago. Yelping would excite him even more. We tried sitting on the chair with our feet up and ignoring him for 30 seconds but he'd try jumping up and barking. In the end we decided to pick him up, say 'stop' quite loudly and put him in the hall (hall...very boring, nothing to see or do for puppy if there is a stair gate) and close the door for 3 seconds. We would then call him back into the room and distract him with a sit/lye command and give him a treat for doing command. We were very fortunate...it took about 4 times of putting in the hall and he has never nipped hard or gone for our trouser legs since. We also praise when he does very gentle mouthing or licking and he seems to have figured out how much pressure he can apply. (now 13 weeks old almost). However i am expecting this to all go out of the window when he starts teething lol!!
