just need a rant!!visitors undo all my good work!

had busy few days with visitors and lexie is still very excitable when other people are around, shes 17 and half months. we sooooo wish others could be a fly on the wall when it is just me, hubby and her all lying watching tv perfectly content. i am nearly 37weeks pregnant and anxious about how things will be with lexie and baby and all people see of her is the crazy bouncy beagle cuz they wind her up and i get so frustrated that they have a bad opinion of her when its not what she is like all the time, i nearly had to have a row with my dad today cuz he was telling her to go to bed and waving his arms around and she was so confused and i wouldnt blame her.
i know she has to get used to having different people in the house but they really arent helping the situation and when i say please dont encourage jumping or being on furniture as we are trying to stop these behaviours i may as well talk to wall!!! said to hubby tonight that i will have to spend next few days trying to undo all the badness that has been done in past few days
rant over

whenever your visitors encourage a bad behaviour put them out of the room for 5 minutes - visitors are social animals and will soon learn the required behaviours in your house

And aren't these just the people that like to 'advise' you on how to correct your dogs behaviour

Tell them! Be firm and give them hell if they disrupt what you want her to do. I'd be furious if people were encouraging my dog to misbehave!

Better to use the archaic form of dog training on visitors who mess up your dog training like smacking them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper and rubbing there noses in it!!

Re: just need a rant!!visitors undo all my good work!

It annoys me too, it annoys me even more when other dog owners out on walks allow Yuri to jump up at them which is why I do not let Yuri off lead if there are lots of people about as he'll run streight up to them and say 'HI CAN I KISS YOU? YES? AWESOME' *lick face* I wish people wouldn't incourage it because Yuri is loopy, he's a very high energy dog that needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation (more than my sibes do) and them incouraging him to jump up makes it worse...

Mind you he at least only does it when they incourage him now..

Re: just need a rant!!visitors undo all my good work!

I know what you mean

Now Charlie is fully grown he still has the first jump up at people at the front door. When he was a puppy I had him on a lead, treats, trying to teach him to sit and wait but visitors just blatantly ignored me and greeted him before we were ready. So in all honesty I gave up. After the first excited paws on their belly whilst he gets a rub, he runs off to get a toy to show them

But not so long ago my mother in law got a big scratch on her front from Charlie's greet as she bent down. And she looked and acted so offended, saying she couldn't believe it. Now Charlie didn't scratch her on purpose, it was part of the greet - an accident.

Well, I responded quite rudely saying if she (and others) had obeyed my training rules when he was a puppy he wouldn't have done it. So I basically told her it was her fault, not the dogs.

Don't know if she was more offended by me or the scratch but I don't care

If close family can't obey the training rules, then they too have to deal with the consequences. And that will include not being able to have a quiet cuddle of baby as Lexie will be so used to them fussing her.
