Mixing Cat and Dog food!!!!

Is there a food out there that can be given to both cats and dogs?? as in i leave dry complete mix out for the cats 2-3 kg at a time and they eat as they please. they have been doing this for 2 years now and are perfect weight. i would like my puppy to do the same when its able to have non pup food but cant leave the cat food out as the pup wants to eat it. Any one came across the same thing??

Re: Mixing Cat and Dog food!!!!

Afraid not - cat food has a different nutritional value and content to dog food. The best thing to do would be to feed them in seperate rooms, or the cats on a high work surface that the dog can't reach .

If all else fails the feeding the cats up high will be a good idea. just got to stop the cats eating the dogs food.

Haha, one of my cats always has to have a taste of the dogs' food before they get any! A dog can probably get by with cat food (but it's quite high in fat), cats on the other hand need their own specific diet.

Didn't know that Forthglade did one for both.

Re: Mixing Cat and Dog food!!!!

i wouldn`t feed cat food to a dog, too much protein and the wrong nutrients in it for dogs. i free feed my cats also but their food is up on a worktop in the utility room now so the dogs can`t get to it. i wouldn`t free feed a dog either lol they`re not like cats and they`ll just keep eating everything you put in front of them till they`re sick....then they`ll eat the sick

best to keep the cat food up high and stick to set meals for the pup in my opinion

Re: Mixing Cat and Dog food!!!!

I'd run a mile from any food claiming to be suitable for both cats and dogs - they have very different nutritional requirements and no food could cater for both, not correctly anyway.

If you want to leave dry food out for your cats, put it on a ledge or worktop where your puppy can't reach - although personally I think it's much better for animals to have structured meal times, I mean if one of the cats were to stop eating the dry food from the big bowlful, would it be noticed straight away? Probably not. Whereas if you serve up separate meals, you can monitor exactly what is being eaten. I think it's especially important for dogs, as you can work exercise around feeding times, rather than risk exercising after the dog has just taken a large amount of food which they could if being free fed. Just my view anyway
