Re: let see if your dogs characteristics meet the breed standard

Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

GENERAL APPEARANCE Handsome, strong, muscular and active dog, symmetrical in outline, capable of great endurance with fair amount of speed. Mature dog is handsome and upstanding.

CHARACTERISTICS A distinctive feature is the ridge on the back formed by hair growing in opposite direction to the remainder of coat. Ridge clearly defined, tapering and symmetrical, starting immediately behind shoulders and continuing to haunch, and containing two identical crowns only, opposite each other, lower edges of crowns not extending further down ridge than one-third of its length. Up to 5 cm (2 ins) is a good average for width of ridge.

TEMPERAMENT Dignified, intelligent, aloof with strangers but showing no aggression or shyness.

I don't find the breed standard as detailed as many of the other breeds but I would certainly say Kilo is aloof with strangers - he prefers to be ignored and to ignore and to approach to make friends in his own time but will tolerate over enthusiastic folk who want to fuss him without any aggression. He is without a doubt intelligent and dignity should come as he matures - although lots of people say he is 'very serious' so probably as dignified as a puppy gets!!

He is very wary of new situations at times and is an exceptionally sensitive dog in many ways so needs kind, careful but firm handling at times.

Re: let see if your dogs characteristics meet the breed standard

Bichon Frise...

Characteristics
Gay, happy, lively little dog

Absolutely so! Very gay, very happy and very, very lively!

Temperament
Friendly and outgoing

Again true, Prince loves meeting new people and dogs, so very friendly, but has an outgoing way of approaching it!

The AKC Standard calls the Bichon Frise "a white powder puff of a dog whose merry temperament is evidenced by his plumed tail carried jauntily over the back and his dark-eyed inquisitive expression."
The Bichon Frise is easy to live with, a cheerful, pleasant house dog who enjoys playing games, snuggling into laps and pillows, and perching on the back of the sofa so he can peer out the window.
Exercise needs are easy to meet: a daily walk or two, plus a small yard in which to trot around and stretch his legs.
Bichons are peaceful with everyone, including other pets. There is timidity in some lines, so early socialization is important to develop their confidence.
Though he does have an independent streak, the Bichon Frise is not a dominant dog and responds well to nonforceful training. He prefers learning tricks to formal obedience and is especially bright-eyed when food treats are offered as rewards. Harshness only makes him spiteful.
The three most common behavioral issues with the Bichon Frise are: 1) housebreaking: Bichons are usually difficult to housebreak; 2) separation anxiety: most Bichons are so sociable and dependent on human companionship that they don't do well when left for long periods of time; and 3) some Bichons are barky -- and some have a high-pitched bark that can set your teeth on edge.

Bichon Frise: What's Good About 'Em? What's Bad About 'Em?

I've italicised the parts that apply to Prince in the above extract

Border Collie
JRT
Labrador

Re: let see if your dogs characteristics meet the breed standard

The Rottweiler was known as the 'Dark Guardian Of The Family' ,as for the breed characteristics, here in the UK -

Characteristics
Appearance displays boldness and courage. Self-assured and fearless. Calm gaze should indicate good humour.

Temperament
Good natured, not nervous, aggressive or vicious; courageous, biddable, with natural guarding instincts.

I am fortunate that my 5 do fit the standard and have good temperaments. But, of course they all differ slightly, as all dogs do. To be really critical of them, its Blue that fits the standard perfectly, Judges like to look for the expression on the dogs face, as you can tell a lot from that.

Some of the various rottie clubs hold Character Assessment days, whereby your dog has its Assessment, facing various tasks and challenges and you gain a pass or a fail, but your dog must pass 3 different Assessments on seperate occasions before you get awarded a Certificate

I would love to do more of these but they are always way down south

Poodle

General Appearance
Well balanced, elegant looking with very proud carriage.

True loves being admired, has a very good trot, but likes to go along Walls sort of like a crab.

Characteristics
Distinguished by a special type of clip for show activity and by a type of coat which does not moult
.
Yup also true prefers to look like a scruff bag.

Temperament
Gay-spirited and good-tempered
.
Yes very 'gay' faulty gay tail, but he is a happy little dog. He is good tempered but doesn't like men he doesn't know.

So all in all think he fits it pretty well.

Re: let see if your dogs characteristics meet the breed standard

General Appearance
A graceful, lithe, muscular dog, with no signs of either weakness or coarseness. Whole head pear or wedge-shaped, and expression in repose mild and gentle.

Yes to the above, although his expression in repose I would more describe as slightly moronic...

Temperament
Good-tempered, having an affectionate nature, dignified, not shy or nervous. Mild in repose but full of courage when roused.

Definitely. So affectionate to everyone he meets, can be a little shy of other dogs at first (approaches them very carefully) then very friendly and playful.

Size
Height: about 41 cms (16 ins) at withers. This allows for slight variation below in the case of a bitch and above in the case of a dog. Weight: 8-10 kgs (18-23 lbs).

No and no. We are presuming Monty is from working stock, he is 18 ins at the withers and 11.8kg. When shaved he is as lean as a whippet. When we have met other Bedlingtons Monty looks very butch in comparison.
