jake`s leg....

looks a bit like that right now i`ve cleaned him up with salt water solution and put on some savlon which he proceeded to lick off. it`s not a wound as such, more of a graze that`s broken the skin so i don`t think it needs a vet trip. i`ve been given so much contrasting advice - cover it up/leave it air/use cream/don`t use anything etc. so just wondered what everyone else would do?

Re: jake`s leg....

I'd worry about him licking it and causing an infection if it wasn't covered, but I'm a worrier so it's not really very good advice lol I hope it gets better quickly for him, looks sore xox

Re: jake`s leg....

Sudocreme and boxers thats my answer for everything

If it's a graze you should be fine to just leave it as you've already savlon'd it, if Jake keeps licking stick a pair of boxers on him(tail through the flap) and keep an eye on him

Re: jake`s leg....

It wont need a vet unless it starts weeping, well thats what mine told me when I took Xiva in, after she got what looked like that after wearing Dixies non pull harness! Grrr. I had to put a lampshade collar on her to stop her licking the cream off but its all ok now

Re: jake`s leg....

He must be prevented from licking it at it will delay healing and may cause infection. It will heal a lot quicker if it is left uncovered so the best option is a buster collar so he can't get to it. I wouldn't put any cream on a dog as it is sticky and liable to get dirt trapped in it. I that were one of my dogs I'd just bathe it in salt water twice a day and prevent licking.

Hope he gets well soon. How did it happen?

Re: jake`s leg....

haha boxers just fall off jake even so it`s quite far down his leg so they wouldn`t work and i can`t get anywhere to buy a buster collar. he doesn`t seem too bothered with it now actually, i think cause i made a huge fuss of it he was too but once i stopped he stopped it`s dried up now anyway so i`m just gonna keep bathing it with salt water but if he does start going back to it tonight then i`ll need to loosely wrap a bandage around it maybe?

him and syd were fighting again i think syd`s tooth caught jake`s leg but it`s literally a scrape so he could just have grazed it on the wall when he was in the garden and i never noticed. jake`s always covered in little scabs and bald patches but i got a shock with this as it looked really bad when i first seen it. they`re both laying curled up together now, wish they`d make up their mind

Re: jake`s leg....

Some dogs are good and will leave it alone, other will have a go at it and make it worse. Ive had a mixture of the two over the years. Sometimes Ive found with mine, if you cover it they will leave it alone, leave it open and they will worry at it. All you an do is see if he leaves it if not try covering it.
best dressing ive found is a Melolin pad and micropore tape, its very light and it can still "breathe".

Cooled boiled water and salts about the best thing to bath it ive found.
You could try anti lick trips, to deter him think P@H might do them, but as it is open or looks it you would have to put a melolin pad on it to cover it first
