Quick update on Mia
For anyone that remembers the problems I was having socialising my rescue GSP, Mia, here is a quick update.
The social walking classes are going really well. She can now walk around 5m away from the other dogs in the class really comfortably within showing any signs of stress or anxiety. She has learned to signal to other dogs and we are hoping to let her have a proper meet and greet within the next week or so.
One thing that has helped is that around three weeks ago we securely fenced off a large area of the pub garden. It is fenced with bow top railing along the road side and stock fencing on the other sides so Mia is able to see everything go past and watch everything that goes on around her. Because she is off lead and in a familiar and safe environment she has learned to relax when other dogs go by. There are still a couple that make her anxious but she mostly is just excited to see them. There are quite a few that she greets through the fence properley and we have let one her play with one young puppy in the safe area under the behaviourists supervision.
This was a puppy that Mia was introduced to when it was seven weeks old and they have always been allowed to sniff one another over the bar so it was safe. Mia has not felt threatened by such a young pup and has been really good with him. They meet every few days and she is used to seeing him around the pub. On tuesday Mia was with me in the bar just as we opened. I wasn't expecting anyone to come in and was just taking her back into the accommodation area when the door opened and the young pup, now 12 weeks old, came running in off lead straight over to Mia and started jumping up at her. My heart stopped for a minute but Mia was great. She stood and nuzzled the pup with her tail wagging. The pup's owner came over and picked him up, let her sniff a little more then we separated them. That evening the behaviourist came over to train another dog in the secure area so I told her what had happened. The pup came back just as the behaviourist was going to leave so she said to let them meet so she could see Mia's reaction. It went so well she said to let them play off lead for a couple of minutes. It was fantastic. I am so proud of Mia and how far she has come.
