dog that won't eat

My friend has a 10 month old bichon and he isn't eating properly.
I don't know all of the food she has tried but she has tried alot of different wet & dry dog food. I use Wainwrights with my puppy and gave her some of that to try but he wasn't interested.
The only thing he eats is scrambled egg but she read that dogs should only get eggs maybe once a week so isn't ideal for everyday feeding.
I had a dog when I was younger and gave her tuna sometimes to mix up her diet. Is this ok to feed daily?
Does anyone have any other suggestions she could try? I did mention the raw diet but her relative had a bad experience feeding raw so she is a little put off.

Re: dog that won't eat

Has he had a full health check at the vets?

If there is nothing medically wrong with him, then she needs to be firm. Food put down for 15 mins, then lifted up regardless of if its eaten or not. No treats in between meals. He'll soon start eating.

No animal will starve itself. Sounds like this puppy has figured out that if he holds on long enough, he will get the food he really wants.

Swapping and changing all the time will only create a fussy dog.

Re: dog that won't eat

Eggs are not good on a regular basis. Tuna is ok, but a bit rich for every day; it makes one of mine sick, so I don't use it.

Has this dog been checked by a vet? First, make sure there is no medical reason, and then stop fussing.

She should put the dog's food down at a regular time, leave it for twenty minutes, then take it up, eaten or not. No more till next feed time, then repeat.

The dog knows she is getting in a state about it and he is getting lots of attention, and he is getting special stuff like scrambled eggs. He has got it made!

I had to put one of mine of eggs, fish and rice for a week because of an upset tummy, but it took ages before he would go back to his proper food. Dogs aren't stupid, and he is not likely to starve.

It takes a bit of willpower and little less worrying.

Re: dog that won't eat

I'm not sure if he has been to the vets - she did say she was going to speak to her vet to see what they suggested.

She has started putting it down then taking it up but he can go for 4 days not eating anything! I did say he won't starve himself but she has noticed him losing weight so a vet check is probably the first step she needs to take.

Re: dog that won't eat

Candy was similar and would go days without eating and got a little too lean. I would feel obliged to keep her going with things she would eat but she did eventually grow out of it and at 2 years old is not a huge eater but is, if anything, slightly overweight. And eats proper dog food!
Wainwrights trays from pets at home helped a lot. It is high in meat and the dog does not need to eat a huge amount of it. I did have to encourage her to eat for a while but now she digs in on her own.

THIS ^^^^^^^^^

She's not going to eat dog food if she knows that waiting long enough will produce some human food!!
