Re: General advice on 5 month old labrador puppies

I had two different experiences with closely related bitches, Indie was by far an easy peasy puppy compared to Tau. Both were easy to train as such, apart from Tau was incredibly mouthy, really active, clearing a baby gate by about six months of age, and running so fast indoors it was like a wall of death!

I didn't introduce the crate to Tau until she was several months of age, mistakenly believing that with Indie there she'd be fine. However, in the end, I had to crate her for her own safety, as she was/is a chewer given half a chance. And I have to say, I had no problems with the crating at all. I'm not saying all training will be easy by any means, but I think the most crucial thing will be whether the pup has been socialised, as all other training will get there given a bit of time and effort, but socialisation is a different kettle of fish and can be more difficult to crack if the pup hasn't been well socialised.

Re: General advice on 5 month old labrador puppies

You will have to retrain and socialise any dog, of any age, from any situation.
As this is a youngster, you will need to spend a lot of time training (time the previous family obviously haven`t spent or they wouldn`t be rehoming him).
If you`re prepared to put in the time, great. If not, get an older dog.
BTW remember the old caveat - Buyer Beware. It has been known for people who are trying to get rid of their dog to be less than frank, open and honest.

He is fully jabbed, and house trained, with the odd night time accident. Not crate trained. Spends the day in the kitchen with the back door open all day and goes in the living room when the children have gone to bed.

So what could I expect, if we got him? How at that age, would a pup expect to spend his day? Bearing in mind we have 4 children aged almost 3, 2 x 9yr olds, and a 12 yr old. He has been taught not to nip as the current family have 2 children aged 2 and 5 yrs old. He has also been taught that jumping at the children isnt acceptable behaviour. He has been walking on a lead, but not off the lead.

All advice welcome ........ please. xxx
I think you would have to ask yourself why this family are giving up a 5 month old lab! That would be my first question.
