Re: There, someone finally said it...

Bella barks at the front door and goes nuts.

Usually, i get both dogs in the living room and shut the door, however Bella has started to run up the stairs so she doesn't get locked in.

Now, she likes to sit next to me when I open the door and keep an eye on whoever is at the front door. She doesn't try and go out or say hello.

I wonder if she's being protective????

And? I was under the impression dogs were supposed to bark at strangers at the door, not welcome them in.
I think you`ll find the police recommend a noisy dog as one of the best burglar deterrents.
Don`t see the problem myself.

Re: There, someone finally said it...

Dogs are supposed to bark at the doorbell! They are then supposed to be calm when you ask them to be, which Abbie is by the sounds of it. Silly woman at the door. She should think herself lucky she wasn't calling at my door - we don't have such good control over our dog.... she might have ended up with spaniel wee on her shoes.

I dont understand why so many of you on here seem to think your dogs can behave exactly how they want to, make a lot of noise and generally annoy people and anyone that thinks it is out of order is in the wrong. Dogs should be seen and not heard if they are to fit into the society most people live in. I am lucky and live in the country with no neighbours but when I lived in a town I would have been mortified if my dogs had made any noise that upset my neighbours.

Seriously?! At no point did anyone on this thread say their dog may do as it pleases. Pretty much everyone says how they control their dog re the doorbell. Annoy people? If my dogs bark at the door, good! It's a couple of barks, it lets people know there are dogs here, it is indeed the best burglar deterrent.

Seen and not heard? I don't think the neighbours get upset: I've trained my lot not to react to next door's GSD but the occasional bark is fine, IMO. At the max, their squeaky toy is the noisiest thing in the garden.

Should I bang on the neighbour's door every time her children are noisy or she shouts at them?

Man, you must be perfect!

Today was no exception and once I got Abbie settled, I answered the door.

Me: Hi, sorry about that!
Her: He doesn't seem very friendly at all.
Me: He's a she and she was only barking because you rang the door bell.
Her: Right, I see, but still.

Anyway, I felt I had to explain but it seemed she'd already made her mind up about Abbie.

I know Abbie is big and has the loudest bark ever but she's not going to kill you!

I always got the impression that people must think we have a nasty dog. We live quite close to the pavement so she will jump up to the windows and have a grumble. Some laugh and others just carry on walking - her bark is much worse than her non existing bite but I can't explain it to everyone.

End of niggle.
Best to nip that in the bud! For example 'Sorry about that - how can I help you?'

Don't give them a chance to comment on why she was barking or if she is friendly or not. You will feel much more in control of the situation.
