I don't think all dogs are affected by chocolate, it is just something you need to be cautious about as it can be poisonous to them. Before I knew any better, my little mongrel used to wait for his fun sized Mars bar when we had been shopping, and he used to suck out the chocolate hanging things from the xmas tree, leaving the foil behind. Never had a problem.

Ferdie stole a box of chocolates once and it scared the life out of me. His eyes were bloodshot, he was charging about like a nutcase and he was drinking vast amounts of water.

It is probably better to be on the safe side.

Re: can't believe what has happened tonight

I know you are not meant to give dogs chocolate but I didnt realise a vets visit was necessary if they had consumed it.

Re: can't believe what has happened tonight

how ridiculous were those vets i would never let any vet take my dog out of my sight, it`s be too stressful if nothing else! glad you stuck your grounds

this is why i always keep soda crystals in the house now! when jake was a puppy he ate some of my pills so i run him up to my vets and all he did was give him soda crystals and rush me outside with him to be sick which he was within seconds of getting out the door. i took him back in afterwards and the vet gave me advice on how much to give etc in future but always to ring them first to get their opinion on whether he needed seen or it`d be ok to induce vomiting. they only charged me £17 and it was instantly effective plus natural, think i`d much rather that to morphine and that bill seems huge i`ve never had to use them myself thankfully but always handy to have in case needed

i hope both doggies are ok now? imagine they`re looking very sorry for themselves after it all!

Re: can't believe what has happened tonight

Thanks for everyone's lovely messages yesterday was horrible but I'm glad I acted so fast, not sure if the chocolate would have even affected him but it's not worth taking the chance.

It's so nice coming on here where people understand how much my doggies mean to be, my OH's mum thought I was a bit weird rushing off to the vets at half twelve at night, just because the dogs ate some chocolate!

Wow, firstly, glad you took action and hope the doggies will be alright.

Secondly, definitely write a letter of complaint to the head honcho.
The attitude is just disgusting and you should NOT have to deal with that kind of behaviour during a difficult time!
Surely a VET of all people should be much more understanding and caring?

And thirdly, I used to find the drunk OH to be the best person to rant to! lol
They might not hear or take in anything but they sure do listen and agree with you lots!

My dogs have eaten huge amounts of chocolates over the years - never had any bad affect. The worst was when someone sent me a huge box of Thorntons chocolates by post and the postman shoved it in the door when we were out

But why didnt the vet just tell you to make the dogs sick at home yourself. Why on earth did you need a vet just for that. My vet would not have been bothered anyway. Having worked for a vet for years, never seen or heard of a case of chocolate poisoning and knowing that loads of people feed their dogs chocolate apart from regular thefts! I did speak to my vet about it after reading so much on here - and she said a dog would need to eat an enormous amount of chocolate to have any affect at all.

I think the vets bill was ridiculously high but you were paying for a vet and a nurse at night for a messy job - and for 2 dogs, so though I think it very hight I can see how they reached it. Probably something like £100 for out of hours plus £50 for each dog for examination and treatment and drugs and vat on top.
