PetsWelcome is on a distinguished road
Banning the sale of pets - good idea or not?

So San Francisco is debating banning the sale of live animals in pet shops

Is this a good idea or not?

On one hand there is the risk of encouraging illicit trade in animals, but then again there are so many millions of unwanted pets around that surely most people would get a pet from a shelter rather than a bootlegger. andit would put an end to puppy and kitten mills.

What do you think?

i think it can only be a good thing, most animal species in petshops are churned our on breeding farms its a disgrace!, i wish they'd bring in new laws in the UK to stop pet shops selling animals.
Pupcakes likes this.

Re: Banning the sale of pets - good idea or not?

People will drive to where they can buy a pet and bring it home with them.

I don't agree full stop with the sale of many pets through pet shops, I'd prefer to see good breeders take their place for anything living. There's such a huge amount of suffering in the pet trade, it's absolutely abhorrent

Re: Banning the sale of pets - good idea or not?

I'd like to see pets being sold in shops banned as that isn't the right environment to be bringing up a puppy. From the hands of a responsible, caring breeder, who isn't in it to make a quick buck is the best place.

Although I did buy my 2 from on line, so I can hardly preach...
Dottie was kept in a crate for the first 3 months of her life in the garden - So no social skills with other dogs. I brought her from the lady who took her away from that original "breeder".

Charlie was the result of people letting their dogs mate and calling it "breeding" and selling them. She couldn't give a rats rear about Charlie (then Shadow) she even told me herself!

Back to the point, people who "flog" dogs like this, from what I've seen first hand care about the £££ more than the dogs. I love my 2 with all my heart and don't regret them for a moment, but I do wish they had better social skills, which they probably would have got from a decent breeder.

Sadly though, if it was illegal to sell dogs in shops, I worry that these puppy farmers would just flog them else where

Re: Banning the sale of pets - good idea or not?

The problem with rescues is some have stringent rules and some prospective owners who may be able to provide a loving home for a pet may be turned away by the shelters/rescues, thus driving the demand for byb/puppy farms etc.
But as the origins of most pets from pet shops is dubious anyway, it could be the middle man is just cut out xox

Re: Banning the sale of pets - good idea or not?

It isn't 100% clear in this article whether they are just referring to the sale of animals via pet stores or not. I heard this a few weeks back on some news programme and it indicated they were considering banning the sale of any living creature, from any source not just pet shops, unless it was within the human food industry
