I have 2 lovely rescue puppies Pink and Floyd. I an guessing that they are around 5 1/2 months now. When i got the puppies i signed a contract to say that i would not let them breed and that i would have them spayed and nuetered. What is the best age to do this? Are Pink and Floyd still too young?

I would be greatful for any advice.

My personal view is wait till they are fully mature. This will be between one and (up to) 3 years depending on breed/size. The smaller breeds generally mature earlier than the larger ones.

Are they boys or girls or one of each?

both mine were done at 6months old, according to the vet this is when they are mature enough to get them how can i say chopped off.... lol

I find that the little boy (Floyd) is getting more than a little mmmmmmmm shall i say excited!!!

Well I think you need to do something right now or you're going to end up with some puppies which really would be a disaster for lots of reasons.

Either of them can be neutered now, but I think boys still have some viable sperm for a little while after neutering so getting your girl done might be a better option.

Alternatively you can wait until they are older, but you would need to keep them apart from about now until after the bitch's season.

I'd have a chat to your vet on Monday.

This is the conclusion I've reached after doing exhaustive research (not bragging, I'm just OCD -- I wondered after Aber had IVDD if early neutering could have had any effect on him).

There is no health reason to have a male neutered--there are only behavioral and birth control reasons--and dogs have a lot of growing that gets done after 6 months, especially if they are a larger breed. It's important for the testosterone to stay in their system for their skeletons to form properly. This is not to say that a dog that's neutered young will collapse in a heap and have health problems; just that if they are of a breed prone to structural issues, it's a good idea to wait. If behavioral issues get in the way, of course, then you may have to amend the time table accordingly.

There are health reasons for having a female spayed, however, and those outweigh the benefits of letting her grow longer intact. Females seem to do better if spayed between 6 and 12 months.

Since you have one of each, best maybe to get her done soon and him in a few months maybe.

IMO (and after making a thread) you should better wait until the female has had at least one season, or it can cause problems.
If it was me I would get the male neutered and if the female does come into season within a few weeks of him being done, keep them completely seperate

i have never owned a female dog before always males and never owned two at the same time.

The good thing is when Floyd tries to go near Pink she nips him and he runs away.
