WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

Myself i have always gone for the rescued dogs, all be it when they are puppies not sure i could rescue a fully grown dog as i like to know what happened to them as a puppy, we all know some dogs get mis treated..
this is my opinion, i just find it amazing that people will pay so much money for dogs, say they are nothing but a dog person, but wouldn't consider going to a sanctuary to get a dog....
Just a topic i was having today with a friend, she was anti sanctuary's, as she wouldnt be sure what she got.. as i explained arn't there enough dogs that need homes, how many dogs get put down weekly.....
just made me think what was the majority thought out there
xxx
thanks x

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

my opinion? it`s up to the individual homing the dog, i have done both - purchased jake as a puppy and rescued syd from a centre. i also rescued my baby banjo but that was a private adoption and almost put me off rehoming a dog for life i wouldn`t judge anyone on their decision, some people have specific reasons for not wanting to rescue and i respect that while others simply want that specific puppy or have been refused from rescues (which is all too common) and again i respect that. i`d love to add another lab or goldie to the family when the time is right but as of yet haven`t decided which route i`d go down, i think i`m in the mindset right now that when the time is right the dog will find me whether that be a puppy from a breeder or a dog in rescue but i`ll just know like i did with jake and syd (i was actually looking for a black/white puppy springer bitch when i found him)

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

Both of my parents dogs were from RSPCA and both even tho they were only 6months when they got them had serious behaviour issues. It is something people have to consider they are loving dogs but often need so much more time, love and attention.

My dalmatian was bought because we searched high and low for 6 months and could not find a dalmatian. Penny Pancake our Beagle Cross JackRussell was also bought because Pongo was 9 and he was slowing down and we wanted to make sure that the dog would not bring issues into our home.

If we ever get another dog we are going to resuce, our son starts nursery in September so I will have that extra time and attention to devote to looking after a dog that may have some issues.

As a family we are just not ready yet emotionally to get another dog Pongo has only been gone for 7 weeks and i cant even look at Dalmatians without crying

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

I think it depends on your confidence as a doggy person. For instance, my friend would like to get a dog but she didnt grow up with dogs and so it will be a whole new experience for her and she is very loathed to go down the rescue kennels route. She says that she doesnt know how to 'read' a dog and deal with any issues they may have if they have been mistreated in the past and I thought that was a very good point, although I did point out to her that just because you buy a breed dog, you wont necessarily end up without problems either.

I have one of each, one rescue, one breed. I knew that potentially the rescue dog may have deep rooted problems but was confident that I could sort these out if necessary but then I've had dogs all of my life. For me, my next dog will be another rescue. I dont want to show dogs so theres no need for me to down the breed route again but then again....never say never..!!

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

Would have loved to have rescued

Just wasnt possible for us we wouldnt have passed home checks due to communal gardens

So we went down the route of buying dont regret for a minute tho of course

But its each to their own

as you say i think its preference.. i just cant not go any other route but rescue i could never forgive myself
and both of mine have no issues i guess that could be down to luck, but as you said a breed could have the same deep rooted issues

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

For me I'd go down the rescue route every time. As I don't show my dogs, or ever wish to breed from them, I want a dog as a family pet only, it makes sense to go to rescue.

Most dogs, not all agreed, but most dogs in rescue are there because of marriage break-ups, allergies or change of circumstances etc and not because of their behaviour. I've worked in rescues and most dogs that have been homed to a suitable family, don't have issues. There are one or two that don't work for one or another reason, but on the whole, most rehomes are successful, provided the new family are made aware of any potential "quirks" that the dog might have, and are willing to work with/through them.

You can always get puppies from rescues too. My two boys are rescues, one rescued at 13 weeks, the other one at 8 weeks! Something to bear in mind for those who want puppies.

I have also adopted fully grown adults from rescues, one chewed the kitchen first night, sorted, she slept in a crate for a few weeks..... another bit neighbour, she ignored her warning growls and stuck her hand over the hedge to stroke her - got nipped. We work on issues such as poor recall, fearful aggression, separation anxiety, but they can usually be retrained in time.

i agree so much with what you say, damn wished i said it ..
but people do forget that puppies are left or saved at these sanctuaries, yet people dont put in the effort of calling around to see if thats what they so wish xx

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

I always get second hand dogs, not because of some strong moral code but because I dislike puppies when they have needle sharp teeth Although I recently saved a pound dog from being PTS and gave her a forever home. It never ceases to amaze me how many dogs are PTS each year after being abandoned. The responsibility for this doesn't lie with people who choose to get puppies instead of rescuing though it lies with money hungry puppy breeders who don't care who they sell to and purchasers who don't seriously consider what they are doing before they get a puppy and dump it a few months later.

In an ideal world everyone who could would rescue and no one would chuck out their dog. But I don't see that ever happening do you?
