Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

My older dog is a rescue, that my hubby rescued a couple of years ago, the other 2 were bought as pups from breeders. I would have liked to rescue a older dog but our older dog is more accepting of pups , so that's why we went down that route. But from what I have read on here regarding some rescues, i wouldn't pass, cos of my garden, even though I'm in the country and no where near roads, I have a 4 ft dyke round the garden, which the year old vizzie quite easily leaps over. I do think the rigidity of some rescues put people off rescuing, which is a shame in my book. But I would defo take another rescue on.

I wouldn't tell anyone which route they should go, it's far too personal.
This really gets my goat to. Everytime someone comes on here asking for advice on a new puppy / dog the response is always to go to a rescue etc and usually u get suggested a rescue Staff or Greyhound. Its such an individual choice whether to rescue or not, whether someone is looking for a pup or adult dog and no one should feel pressure for either route - its a individual / family choice.

I would always consider rescuing and I dont understand spending nearly or over a thousand pounds on a pup - I am looking for a pet not show dog and definately am not looking at breeding. As selfish as it may sound my Hubby and I have always said 'one day' we will get a pup, I would love our next dog to be with us from day one but depends on our circumstances etc when that day comes round.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

I think to rescue a dog is bether than a dog from the breeder.

Of course not everyone want to have a dog with a unknown life history and when I see how commercial some sanctuarys are, I can realy understand those peopel.
But I alway have to think of our dog. A feew years ago we had rescued her from a small sanctuary. This was the best thing we could do. At the first time she was realy shy and timouros but with time she was getting bether. Now she is a entirely different dog. But focourse this could be in another way, too.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

My girl Dascha was a rescue as a puppy; I love rescuing a dog from a shelter and the whole feel you've done good!

However upon moving into a flat, when we decided we'd get a second we couldn't find a shelter willing to consider us because of that fact.

Also as my first dog of my own I wanted a breed; to know what to expect in the temprament and again living in a flat needing to know what size the dog will grow to ect. ect. I fell in love with Alaskan Klee Kai's and got my girl Skye.

I intend to get another dog in the near future; another Alaskan Klee Kai.

Now I would adopt but most shelters as said before wont adopt to flats, more difficult to find a good match when you have a pre-existing dog (esp a small one) and such.

Though in future yes; when I move into a house with a garden I do intend to adopt from a shelter!

The way I see it; its up to the individual and their circumstances. Nothing wrong with buying a dog; those dogs too need homes; some people like to show dogs and so fourth.

I dont think anyone is saying they have to get or should get a rescue dog.
Its more a suggestion. A lot of people dont even realise its an option and that every breed has its own rescue too. Ive lost count of the number of times Ive been stopped and asked how much and where do you get one walking mine, and people have been astonished when I have said they are rescues (apart from one of mine) and said they didnt even realise that you could get pedigree dogs. A lot of people still think rescues, are old, problems and/or crosses. The same as people dont realise the difference in a good breeder, bad one or god forbid buying a pup from a type of pet store. It doesnt hurt to educate people of their options and try and promote animal welfare and good breeding.

I hope my post didnt come accross in he wrong way I wasnt trying to say that people say they 'have' to go to a rescue etc more that its an individual choice and no one should feel under pressure to choose one way or the other.

I know in the past I have read posts where people ask for advice on 2 or 3 breeds and 5 pages later people are still adding saying about rescues of other breeds / ages of dogs even thought the original poster has said initially they are interested in X or Y / under 4 months etc.

I appreciate some people will not be aware of breed specific rescues and giving people the right advice to aid a imformed choice is invaluable and im sure that advice from PF has helped a number of new owners identify routes to dog owership they didnt realise was open to them.

No didnt come over the wrong way at all, I only quoted as in a continuation of discussion way tbh. There is a difference I admit between just making a suggestion that a Poster may not have thought about as a possible consideration and pushing the issue too far. Which lets face it does happen occasionally from time to time.

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

I've previously had just the 2 Bedlington from pups, we were then looking to get another dog and we were going to get a puppy but then thought how about rescue. And I won't lie, I love Kyle very much but I've regretted it every since. We were lied to by our rescue and his nature and other certain things and sadly things haven't been great since we've had him, it's all been very stressful and it's been extremely unfair on him.
Tbh I'll now not rescue another dog, If I couldn't trust this rescue how can I put my trust in others. I'd love to rescue a dog as I worked in rescue and know how unfair it is on them but after the trouble we've had this time, I just don't think I'd do it again

Re: WHAT IS YOUR OPINION... to buy dogs... or to rescue them

Its an individual choice. I have always promised myself one puppy, that was Molly, now the rest can carry on finding me and never leaving me.
I really do hate to see posts saying 'PST tomorrow unless someone saves such and such'. Other peoples mistakes are not our responsibility- a lot of us do as much as we can.
I wouldn't begrudge someone buying as many pups of their choice. If its through a proper breeder, whats the problem?
I do wish less were born though.
