How to make an old dogs life that much better??

Well my girl Dascha is going to be 12 soon, she is starting to go blind, well her vision is getting worse and she has slight cataracts forming, her hearing isn't what it once was, she has a slight heart murmur and artheritis .

I was wondering what little things you think I could do to make things a little more special for her!

She loves a good tummy rub, of course she loves food but has a sensitve tum now! She can't walk very far (she can still manage the odd burst of random puppy energy though ).

Not too sure but I want to do something for her! She doesn't live with me all the time but when she is here I want to make things a little more special for my old girl!

She has helped me through a lot and seen me grow up with her! I was only a kid when we got her she's the family dog and has always been my best friend! She looked after me when I was young and I want to look after her now she is old!

Re: How to make an old dogs life that much better??

I have been sitting for 10 minutes trying to think of what I do with my oldies they are all rescues and 12 upwards and other than loads of stroking and letting them get away with things,I did try make a toy box up that they could sort out indoors and after about 5 minutes they all fell asleep.I have been known to load them in the car and take them all around the country lanes but again half way round they all dozed off to sleep

Re: How to make an old dogs life that much better??

Even if she can't walk far, taking her to places where she can sit and watch various things, or encounter new smells etc should enrich her life.

If she likes people, take her to a coffee shop and sit outside if the weather is nice and let people make a fuss of her. Or even just let her watch the world go by.

Im lucky in that my boy, despite being 12 in september, still walks a good 3 hours a day. Although i try to take him to loads of new places, and show him new sights. He is currently making friends with a pair of Kune Kune pigs. Ive found he quite likes to observe other animals (from a distance, as he is a bit of a weed) and smell where they have been.

We have a free range pig farm not far from me, and the footpath runs along the bottom of their paddock. I sat for 20 mins the other day with him whilst he just watched them in fascination, and constantly scented the air.

Have discovered he is scared of camels though.

Re: How to make an old dogs life that much better??

Great ideas of taking her to new places!

Hmmm well I think the cafe idea is great! I'm hoping to do a week of just whatever she wants! She's partial to just laying out in the park with her head on my tummy .

I want to do a few things with just her and not Skye to give her some special alone time!

Massager is a good idea, though I give her massages daily whenever I have her lol she loves them!!

She's not much for toys but loves rocks... strange dog that she is I'll go find her a good old rock or something and as a treat let her have it in the house! Save up a few toilet roll tubes as she loves making a mess with them! Get her some crunched up plastic bottles - another love of hers!

She's very low maintainance haha!
