Help!! Do I try get to the vets today or not??

Rupert's ear is looking a bit sore today. Thing is by a bit I mean on the edge its dry, red and he's made it bleed. I get the feeling as its just one ear it will be an ear infection not irritation hence he'll need antibiotics etc.

Part of me thinks try the Dermacton, but then if its an infection that wont be any good and I can only apply it to the outer part of his ear?

I could wait til tomorrow see if it gets worse but there is a south east meet and even if I ban him from water it'd be so nice if he could go...Plus with his history his skin doesn't normally get better without veterinary help though I haven't tried the Dermacton before.

And its his birthday today. Grrrr

What would you do, try get him in today or see if it develops?

Happy Birthday handsome! didn't know it was your birthday today!

I'm a worry wort so I'd probably take him to the vet today if he were mine! But this is a very biased viewpoint.

That's what I'm like! Only bit holding me back is that I don't really want him on lots of steroids which is what I think the vets will give us

The Dermacton might help but I'm worried its red deep inside his ear where I can't see hence a painful infection and I'd hate to make him go all weekend like that...

I might book an appt for tomorrow and miss the walk if his ear is bad, I don't want to have the vets pump him full of steroids if the Dermacton might work I suppose either...

Sod's law isn't it, only been about 5 weeks since he had ear problems from his groin rash

Would your vets possibly be prepared to try a non steroid option?

Re: Help!! Do I try get to the vets today or not??

Not sure how you feel but could you take him to the vet, ask his opinion and are steriods avoidable. Hear what he has to say and decide there and then with a bit of his input.

Now that I'm older I've decided there are a lot of things in life that I dont have to go along with and there is nothing wrong with having a consultation and deciding against the medication offered or having a bit more input. At the end of the day, we know our animals best.

I was having concerns about my vet but the last time I took Heidi, he listened to what I had to say and changed his tactics re her treatment. Meant a lot to me.

Cant seem to get across the point I'm trying to make but hope you get the gist

Re: Help!! Do I try get to the vets today or not??

Had booked him an apt for 9.50am tomorrow but rang back and got 10.20am today, not waiting he's just scratching at it whenever he's not eating/chewing something and I don't think the Dermacton will be much help as I don't think it can go on internal ear areas which I can see a little redness on.

They would but its just a matter of it doesn't always clear up otherwise. For that groin rash he had a steroid injection and antibiotics and steroid cream. It still wasn't getting better so he got prescribed two weeks of oral steroids too! Ear drops we have without steroids in don't normally work, we've had some take 13 days to show an improvement whereas steroid ones show an improvement and he is in less pain within a day. They do seem to work for him for what he has had I will have to ask the vet if there is anything magical and non steroidal we can try

It depends who we're seeing really I know the dermatologist guy is fantastic. But with skin probs they cause Roo so much pain I'm not sure if I dare not give him steroids when it gets to a certain point. His ear really isn't even that bad now but I know we'll have to go back next week and again after that etc

Re: Help!! Do I try get to the vets today or not??

Good idea to change it till today...you know what they are like with these ear infections...within a couple of hours it can be twice as bad...
Do ask the vet about the aurizon...as i sad it works wonders for Mavis...I have a bottle in the house now most of the time just incase, and can also just ring up for a repeat prescription for it

Gentle hug for Rupert form me

Re: Help!! Do I try get to the vets today or not??

Well Dermacton ( and Quistel) ear cleaner and itchy ear drops works for us- took me ages to find the right ones! But I think you have the spray? which is more for the body.

We have ongoing problems with Monty as his inner ears are very hairy and has narrow ear canals so he suffers with waxy build up and the occasional yeast infection flare up.

He scratches them like mad ( normally it's always one ear that bad) so I get the cleaner out and drops if needed. Just mention ears and he skulks off

He does go nuts after they are put in for about half and hour then after that it's total relief for him.

We used to go to vets and had all the usual anti-biotics and I have tried various cleaners. But they never really worked that well. In the end I did my own research on cleaners etc.... and apart from one yeast infection he has not needed the vets again for his ears.

Ear cleaners tried : clean aural, Epiotic, Sancerum, Vetzyme.

But now this works apart from the yeast infection I mentioned which we had to go to vet for and get a steroid but that's not something I really want to use.

I hate to see them suffer with their ears.

Hope you get it sorted soon- bless him x
